A bit samey but enjoyable.
Played the Links Course with 3 others who stayed the night. The front 9 was not very interesting with lots of straight holes going up and down. Nearly every hole was driver off the tee. The course overall presents a challenge with the rough being extremely unforgiving. If you hit it off line you’re getting another ball out of your bag and going again. The greens had has some maintenance but still ran well. Bunkers were virtually all waterlogged even though the course was in good, dry and playable condition. Tee boxes could do with a bit of TLC as the grass was long and generally very, very uneven. There was a lack of fairway markers for yardages which made it a little difficult without the annoying laser binoculars everyone else seems to have. The other three stayed the night which I’m glad I didn’t. Our meal took 2+ hours to arrive which is astonishing considering its a set menu of only 3/4 choices per course and when it did arrive it wasn’t a meal I would be paid to eat. I heard the breakfast wasn’t any good either.
The Lakes course provided more of a challenge apparently and was well worth a go with a lot more dog legs and thinking holes.
If you are looking for an overnight getaway I probably wouldn’t recommend solely for the service in the hotel.

Lovely challenging course
A good challenge and some difficult holes. Course in good condition. In a group of 10 staying for 3 nights. Food menu was the same each evening.Hotel a bit of a let down as sporting facilities closed ay 6pm and bar at 11pm despite being hotel guests.

Good day out
There for a golf society weekend. Played both the Links and Lakes course. Both courses offered something different, but think the Lakes course is more interesting.(Round played: Sep 2021 - Score: 75 Handicap: 11)

Not great
Lakes course was ok, Bunkers should all be GUR! Patchy in places. Clubhouse very worn down. Like a maze with poor signage inside. Range was shut on a sunday to.(Round played: Sep 2021 - Score: 90 Handicap: 12.6)

Superb course
Not easy course. Lot of rough along side of fairway. Once the ball goes in long grassit was impossible to rescue penalty points

Hi 5 at Five Lakes
This course is laid out very well and has a number of challenges. There is a lot of water and bunkers this can be managed with careful course management. The course was busy so the play was a little slow at times, but cleared for the back nine. I have also played and stayed here this was also very good.Reviewer Rating

Bad timing
The course, tricky in the wind with lightning fast greens that are borderline impossible to hold the ball onto. Fairways very brown and rock hard. As for the experience, horrible, seems like the place was happy to cram as many tee times in as possible making it a pathetically long round at 5 hours for a 3 ball. Take the money over a players experience, will not be visiting again.(Round played: Sep 2020 - Score: 99 Handicap: 19.1)

Pleasantly surprised
A group of 8 of us played the Lakes Course at Five Lakes . I have moved to Colchester just over a couple of years ago and those I had spoken to had not given very favourable reports of Five Lakes . There were a large number of golfers playing both courses mainly society golfers . Pace of play was ok , greens in good conditions , fairways were no worse than other courses I have played after this dry Summer . I would not want to be a member at Five Lakes as seemed most of the trade were societies and would not be great turning up at 2pm as a member and finding yourself behind all these . I would certainly play the course again .Reviewer Rating
