Not worth the money
Booked a 2 ball to check the course out to see if it was worth booking a 12 man golf break next spring. The website stated that the cost for a 2 ball was £45. I booked by phone because we wanted a buggy as well. When we arrived we were told the cost was £60 for a 2 ball. The buggy was £30 which is the same as Woburn charge!\The course layout is not bad and a reasonable test of golf at 6600 yds off the yellows. However the greens were appalling. They were bumpy, bare in patches, diseased and covered in worm casts. In mid-september all golf courses should have good greens but these were no better than temporary winter greens. There was very little definition between fairway and green. For tees read greens, as the same problems existed on those in terms of condition and it was difficult to find a flat area on any of them. If the course is in this condition in September, goodness knows what it will be like in a couple of months. The other issue we had was the fact that Tuesdays is ladies day which we were not told about at the time of booking otherwise we would have booked a later time but as the course was busy with the ladies we waited on every hole from the 6th. There are far better maintained courses within a half hour drive of this course and what they charge is simply not worth the money. Needless to say we will not be going for a golf break there\\Reviewer Rating

Frustrated that tee shots that run off fairways 1-2 yards can’t be found.
Greens a good pace, fairways lots of divot holes.

some greens in poor condition
obviously weve had a long hot summer and we should give courses some slack but The Essex wasn't in good condition at all on a couple of greens in particular: they didn't look like greens at allOther than that it was ok

Whats going on with Greens!
This is a great place, facilities are spot on, course is very nice, long but good and challenging but not too hard. The problem is the Greens, I have played over 30 different courses this year and these greens are by far the worst. Some courses I have played have less sand in the bunkers! They have been spiked to the point they are just spike holes and sand with a little bit of green around them. Shame as it makes putting pointless its luck if they bobble in or wide.

Dull and over rated
Very flat, very long and unimaginative. Better courses nearby.Welcome from staff was very cold and in general the bar/restaurant very unwelcoming. Have to remember this is “country club” so better golf options out there welcoming of golfers and a nicer clubhouse ambience.
Over priced for the experience

Unimaginitive
First the good bits.. the course is well maintained, great fairways which are flanked by trees which punish wayward shots and the par threes are nice. The major issue is geographical.. being based a very flat former WW2 airfield (a small one still exists right next to it) it is dead flat and many of the holes present the exact same challenge. Straight drive, long approach, try and avoid the inevitable bunkers to the left and right of each green, putt on the largely flat greens.. repeat, repeat. . It's nice, but you do get tired of playing largely the same shots on each hole and you are often left wondering if more imagination could have been used years ago when they were laying out the course.. Nice, worth a visit, but not a gem.Reviewer Rating

Good course
A pretty good course although the greens on this occasion weren't great as being treated and very bobbly. Some nice challenging holes and a long course.(Round played: Aug 2021 - Score: 96 Handicap: 19.9)
