Not worth the money
Booked a 2 ball to check the course out to see if it was worth booking a 12 man golf break next spring. The website stated that the cost for a 2 ball was £45. I booked by phone because we wanted a buggy as well. When we arrived we were told the cost was £60 for a 2 ball. The buggy was £30 which is the same as Woburn charge!\The course layout is not bad and a reasonable test of golf at 6600 yds off the yellows. However the greens were appalling. They were bumpy, bare in patches, diseased and covered in worm casts. In mid-september all golf courses should have good greens but these were no better than temporary winter greens. There was very little definition between fairway and green. For tees read greens, as the same problems existed on those in terms of condition and it was difficult to find a flat area on any of them. If the course is in this condition in September, goodness knows what it will be like in a couple of months. The other issue we had was the fact that Tuesdays is ladies day which we were not told about at the time of booking otherwise we would have booked a later time but as the course was busy with the ladies we waited on every hole from the 6th. There are far better maintained courses within a half hour drive of this course and what they charge is simply not worth the money. Needless to say we will not be going for a golf break there\\Reviewer Rating

Frustrated that tee shots that run off fairways 1-2 yards can’t be found.
Greens a good pace, fairways lots of divot holes.

some greens in poor condition
obviously weve had a long hot summer and we should give courses some slack but The Essex wasn't in good condition at all on a couple of greens in particular: they didn't look like greens at allOther than that it was ok

Whats going on with Greens!
This is a great place, facilities are spot on, course is very nice, long but good and challenging but not too hard. The problem is the Greens, I have played over 30 different courses this year and these greens are by far the worst. Some courses I have played have less sand in the bunkers! They have been spiked to the point they are just spike holes and sand with a little bit of green around them. Shame as it makes putting pointless its luck if they bobble in or wide.

Great course but incredibly slow pace of play
Course was in great condition (fairways, bunkers, greens all very good), only affected by the impact of the large numbers of resident geese! But the pace of play was extremely slow, not clear why (quite a few players joining groups later in the round?).Reviewer Rating

Dull and over rated
Very flat, very long and unimaginative. Better courses nearby.Welcome from staff was very cold and in general the bar/restaurant very unwelcoming. Have to remember this is “country club” so better golf options out there welcoming of golfers and a nicer clubhouse ambience.
Over priced for the experience

Unimaginitive
First the good bits.. the course is well maintained, great fairways which are flanked by trees which punish wayward shots and the par threes are nice. The major issue is geographical.. being based a very flat former WW2 airfield (a small one still exists right next to it) it is dead flat and many of the holes present the exact same challenge. Straight drive, long approach, try and avoid the inevitable bunkers to the left and right of each green, putt on the largely flat greens.. repeat, repeat. . It's nice, but you do get tired of playing largely the same shots on each hole and you are often left wondering if more imagination could have been used years ago when they were laying out the course.. Nice, worth a visit, but not a gem.Reviewer Rating

Lovely course
The Essex County Course is long and I mean long. If you're a straight long hitter, then this is the course for you. Unfortunately the recent scorching weather had ravaged at least 4 of the greens, making putting a challenge. Have played this course before when it was in much better condition. Hopefully it'll return to it's full glory in the Spring.(Round played: Sep 2018 - Score: 103 Handicap: 24.3)

Needs attention
Long, flat course with water in play on most holes. Rough generally isnt too penal and fairways are wide, but there are strategic fairway bunkers scattered around. You need to hit driver on most holes or your second shot will be lengthy. A few dog legs mostly to the left so a good course for lefties. Not easy for a higher handicapper with a fade/slice though. Bunkers are bare, need more sand in them and a lot of the greens are bobbly, the most unrepaired pitchmarks ive ever come across, not sure why this is? Not the toughest course if you are a power hitter but a real slog if you are short off the tee. Can be quite slow pace of play some days. Decent winter course though. Holds up well in wet weather.Reviewer Rating

Pleasant course
Considering how dry it has been thought the course was in good condition . Greens very true . I played when the course was empty and I was a little confused which way to walk to the next tee a couple of times . I am not a long hitter this was worried as course may be too long for me at 6900 yards . As weather has made the fairways so dry it did not feel long . Maybe a long course in the winter . I am considering joining as like the Garden course and thought in winter could do nine holes on the County Course and nine on the Garden .Reviewer Rating
