East Sussex National

The course layout is excellent, however the course was disappointing. The greens were inconsistent and the fairways were bare. Bunkers were in good condition. Hospitality was ok although drinks were expensive. Seems the desire to get maximum number of golfers out on course has had a big impact on the quality of the course

The two courses are both in great condition and offer a fair challenge. The variety of holes is great and the setting is beautiful. Good price for the package we got.Great setting and a fair challenge.

Good condition considering

No trolleys, damp in places but no standing water. All Bunkers GUR. Advised that tricky in rough and as soon as ball dropped in there it was difficult to find. Very tufty rough. Tees in good condition and greens need a cut but the rain has caused growth and all green v slow.

The hotel complex is large and modern. My room was very comfortable and had the best shower I have ever had in any hotel - hot and very powerful! Also, had Sky Sports channels in the room too - an unusual bonus.
The golf courses were both unfortunately really wet, (despite two glorious days of sunshine and 15 degree temperatures in November) so my feet were soaking despite waterproof shoes, after just a couple of holes.
The food for the main evening meal was quite basic - and just warm rather than hot. Breakfast however, was excellent, with huge amount of choice.
I'd certainly return but probably not so late in the year.

Beware if you run a society day there. Apart from the East course which unfortunately had suffered with persistent rain you had to stay on the path with your trollies, walk to the ball and return. This was unfortunate but acceptable. The real challenge came when two of your players went down with COVID and were unable to play on the day due to there own wellbeing and others. Made this information known to the Club who said they would deal with it, unfortunately because I had paid upfront I was expecting to receive some monies back as we had given notice of more than 48hours. When I asked on the day for a refund they told me that I couldn't get my money back, basically the COVID pair should of turned up and played. They insisted that as a good will gesture I could have the monies as a credit behind the bar or credit towards another society day at East Sussex National. To say I was unhappy off was an understatement. So be warned make sure everyone turns up even if they are ill in bed or dead. On another note they were quite happy for me to bring extra people on the day if I had space and to take the extra money, they just don't want to give you any back.

Played East and West, not especially impressed with the East, made more annoying by having to stick to buggy paths only (although appreciate was wet) Played West course next day in glorious sunshine and walked with a trolley. What a treat, a truly magnificent golf course , great greens and mix of holes. Hotel accommodation was good, but public areas were soulless, bar prices extortionate. Food was ok. Got to breakfast 15 mins after opening and everything was cold !!! Receptionist very friendly and helpful

Great courses, not so great accommodation.

Two great courses, greens were immaculate and pretty difficult. Golf staff were friendly and helpful. Hotel accommodation is dated, food was okay but bedroom quilts were awful, shower overflowed and one member of evening bar staff was rude and obnoxious.

Challenging but fair

We played both courses and each was in very good condition. The staff of the golf centre and the hotel were all most helpful and friendly and the rooms were very comfortable and spacious. All the food was excellent.

Recovering from course maintenance

Played the West Course at ESN 3 days after it re-opened following course maintenance. Found it to be in far better condition than anticipated with greens running relatively true apart fro the odd bobble. Obviously take a couple of weeks to recover fully, but nevertheless in a good playable condition.

Trying to be something it’s not

I’ve played at ESN many times and enjoy the courses but it’s clinging onto the fact it hosted some European tour events 30 years ago and still thinking they can charge £££ for average condition golf courses however today I encountered rules I thought were long gone in golf. I arrived with my 14 year old daughter who is now showing an interest in golf so I thought we’d go to the range at ESN and maybe use the excellent practice facilities. I went into the pro shop to buy a token and was looked up and down and told I had to be wearing proper golf attire to use the range?! I was wearing a t-shirt and golf shorts but apparently for ESN that’s not good enough. When I asked why I was told ‘that’s the rules’ in a way that’s suggests that’s common practice for any driving range. I’ve played golf all over the world at some excellent venues and NEVER heard of that. I played at Gleneagles last week and used the range whilst wearing a similar outfit and they couldn’t have been more friendly yet this time pot dinosaur of a club doesn’t want to promote golf as a fun, relaxed sport for everyone, it wants to think this is still the 1970s and we should all be wearing plus 4’s and jackets. Such a shame I wasn’t allowed to practice with my daughter. I will never go back.
