Mixed Bag

A reasonable parkland course.
A bit of a mixed bag of holes, quite plain & boring on the top part of the course, 1 to 4 & 15 to 18. 5 isn't a bad hole, but then 6 through to 14 is tight & interesting, very tree lined with some slopes.
The greens looked good, but were heavily sanded so hard to tell exactly. I know it's been wet & therefore difficult to mow, but you couldn't tell the rough from the fairways.
The bunkers contained surprisingly good sand, they all just needed raking.
Some golf etiquette is needed for some of the dog walkers, They just wandered around willy nilly!
All the staff were great, the hotel in nice but needs a bit of a spruce up, food was excellent.

Benefit of the doubt - Will have to return

Not the best of days to play and definitely not in the best condition. The tees were overgrown and unblalanced, the fairways were not defined and quite muddy, or at least short of grass. 1st 9 greens very sandy and quite wet. 2nd 9 - no sand and drier. Can only hope that course is in better shape in the summer months. Will have to return to check.

greens were good but the fairways and rough needs a cut badly, made searching for your ball difficult even if you hit a straight one, fairways far too long

Open verdict?

From a golf stand point it was disappointing. I don't like to write negative stuff so I will start by saying I will get to the positives later. I suspect the problems were largely weather related as the fairways, especially on the first two holes were two inches long and the rest longer than expected. Given that I had come 50 miles from the Essex clay which is still quite playable I was surprised. After all it has been the driest summer on record and one of the warmest Octobers although there had been a fair amount of recent rain. Most of the bunkers looked like they hadn't been raked for weeks and there was a general neglected look with bumpy uncut tees. Being a windy day it was difficult with virtually no run on the ball and sometimes plugging in the fairway. So to the plus points. There are some nice holes although many of them are quite similar. No need to worry about hazards as no ditches or ponds. The greens were good given the wetness all round. There is a pretty par 3 although the 200 yard narrow 16th one into a strong wind was problematical! The last back to the Manor was a nice looking hole. Played mid-morning and it was not busy. To offset the criticisms you have to take into account the value for money. For a parkland course in Surrey the green fees were low and the deal with the burger and chips and a pint made it exceptional value. All of the staff were very helpful and friendly.
So to sum up I would imagine this would be a nice course to play in the summer but for higher handicappers and the more discerning I can only see it getting more muddy as winter progresses. Perhaps I will be able to return next summer and give it a glowing review.

We stayed at the hotel for 1 night and played 2 rounds. My expectations of the course were pretty low but it was actually well suited to our very mixed ability and experience group. The layout was interesting enough for the regular golfers but not too challenging for those in our group who play once every few years. There's no water hazards or ditches, it's fairly short in length, and the trees are generally not too penal. However, it was quite windy as on a hill and the rough was really juicy after recent rains. Most of the fairway bunkers were GUR and the fairways a bit long but the greens were surprisingly decent. Easiest improvement to the course condition would be cutting the tees though, almost like teeing up in the rough. Didn't see a single green keeper in 2 days. Overall, we enjoyed it. I wouldn't rush to return but I do think the place has potential, and is very laid back making it ideal for novice or infrequent golfers in particular. It was very busy and pretty slow to get round though.

Good value for money.

Course dried out, but still played welln balls. Long run on balls helped a shorter hitter like me. Because of drought, repairs on putting green and some holes left patchy areas. They are allowing some bunkers to grass in, don't know why.
