However the course was in fair condition with very firm fairways and good greens. Bunkers were also reasonable.

Mr
Played for the second time in 2 years. Well maintained. No frill, but not as easy as it might look. Excellent service by the host Claire, made us feel feel welcome. Greens and fairways in good condition. Will play it again next year. .Reviewer Rating

Poor Course
Played here July 2019I didn't enjoy this course & wouldn't play it again.I only played it to tick it off as i hadn't played it before.
It all feels a bit basic from when you arrive (walking to the 1st tee there are mounds of rubble/sand ?) to the hole designs .Also it's an undulating & hard walk round .
The green complexes are quite minimal & most greens are oval shaped with fairly flat or sloping slightly upturned saucerish surfaces & some greens just sit in a featureless open area surround with no greenside bunkering or moundings around it .I also found that on medium length approach shots the greens ,although not particularly firm , weren't that receptive & the ball would run to or over the back & if you landed the ball short the ball the same would happen.Quite a few greens had small patches of sunburnt blemishes on them .
The fairways & tees had a lot of weeds on them & the bunkering sometimes consisted of a hole with only one bunker on it & in an unusual position.
A hole layout map on the scorecard or a hole layout sign on each tee would have been useful as well as marker posts for the blind 2nd shots on the par 5 6th & 9th holes.
The 17th tee is close to the clubhouse but you then have to play a long uphill par 5 going back out away from it & we weren't motivated to play these last 2 holes .

Maturing well
As a course opened at the time when golf was dipping in popularity, it has done well to survive. The greens, which suffered from a disease in 2017, have all but recovered and putt true, with subtle borrows all over the place. Good use of water keeps the greens playable even in the severe heat of last summer. Give it a go, you won't regret it!Reviewer Rating

Avoid like the plague
What a dive. The clubhouse feels like a prefabricated barracks room and the car park is a mudhole in Louisiana type affair. The course, whilst monet has been spent in it, is a shocker. No challenge at all and extremely dull. The greens however were the crowning glory. Diseased soft muddy awful looking things. I washed all my gear and disinfected my shoes after playing here. Avoid this place. Its terrible.Reviewer Rating

great value for money
Chalgrave Manor was in great shape, it is certainly improving all the time. Greens were better, still on the slow side though but good to putt on.Quite a good lay out and some pretty holes.

What a transformation. Gone is the featureless landscape, poor fairways and greens. Each hole is now more clearly defined with trees now lining many of them. Greens are well maintained and good tee boxes. It now stands proud amongst the other courses in the area of similar price. Food also good value, and friendly and helpful staff.
Well worth a visit.

A deceptively challenging course with a need for both accuracy and length from most tees to give you the best chance of hitting the greens, which are all fast and undulating and most are fairly small. Set on a hill side surrounded by farmland, some of the views are awesome, but that also means that the walk is a fairly hilly one, so buggies would be recommended for those less able or inclined to walk the course. Whilst the greens are small, fast and undulating, they are true and consistent and kept - like the rest of the course - in very good condition. Watch out for the 10th - a great little par 3, over a pond with a green that slopes steeply from back to front - but much more tricky than it's yardage or stroke index suggests. Thoroughly enjoyed my round, despite my score, and I look forward to taking it on again soon.
