Had our annual golf day 5/12/14 played Palmerston course, very poor more a mud bath than golf course even pro shop said it was very muddy. The course should have been closed but hosting a society £££ kept it open very very poor . To top the day off served spaghetti swimming in oil most of the guests left their food. We have played every year at Brocket for many years and until Friday had no complaints unfortunately this year has left a disappointed sour taste don't think we will return next year.

Poor

Played the Melbourne course. Pro shop not very helpful or at all enthusiastic about welcoming visitors.
And for the price of the green fees the least I would expect is the bunkers to be raked over every morning. Some of them looked untouched for days. This venue and courses deserve much better maintenance, and service than it is getting at present.

Melbourne course

Played the Melbourne for a change, not played it in a long while. Friendly starter, nice practise area convenient for the first. Course is a good test, several excellent par 4's, water in play 5 times. Never liked the first hole, apart from that it's the strongest Clark/Alliss layout I know of. Both courses deserve to be in the top 10 in Hertfordshire if we are just talking about design.
Sadly, brocket is better known these days for various financial shenanigans, and it's now very obvious in the condition of the course. The quoted green fees are extremely steep, which is fine but I have to judge what is on offer against that price. Fairways are extremely bare after a dry few weeks. Greens pretty good, 8 on the stimp, but you'd expect quicker for the price. Several tees, not to mention the grass practise area, are completely brown, which is bizarre as they have sprinklers, which are obviously not operational. Brocket has to work out how to get some of the several billion gallons of water from the lake onto the course, it really can't be that hard.
Not surprisingly, the course was completely empty. At the moment, it compares very poorly to other courses in the area that ask for rather less money. The academy should be a great selling point, but I visited letchworths a few weeks ago and it is considerably better.
Over rated on here by a lot, needs to get its act together.

The Palmerston course is very challenging, open with some lovely views of hertforshire. The course is very nicely layout with hidden greens making each shot a challenge.

The greens I have to say were very poor. The speed of the ball on the green was very slow resulting in having to put more swing on the putter. Also i have say the course is very badly signed as many of the holes cross over, causing confusion on where next to go next.

Course in good condition, some incredibly difficult borderline unfair pin positions on the Palmerston Course. Watch the days / time you play. We had fourball at 1.20 on Palmerston took us 5 hours even longer on the Melbourne Course, 5 hours 10 mins off at 9.20. Total lack of Marshals until 11th hole. Slow play should have been resolved quicker. Would like to play again but would ensure course was not full of large societys devoid of etiquitte.

Played the Melbourne Course in early November on a society day. The facilities and hospitality were first class but I have to say that the course was extremely boggy. Greens fine but fairways and rough less so. Shoes, trousers and trolley filthy by the time I'd finished. Essendon not far away and suffers from the same problem. Would not recommend playing after rain. Probably much better (and considerably more expensive) in Summer months. Course layout OK - but nothing too exceptional. Food provided was outstanding though.

We played using a special discount voucher, otherwise it would seem rather expensive. Excellent course design and challenge, especially having to hit the ball across the river on 4 holes when we lost 5 balls between the 3 of us. However, some holes were not well sign posted with many greens roped off. This did mean that we were a bit slow as it was also our first visit and we were asked to hurry up! Being advised that the ferry was not working, we walked round to the 18th, thereby taking a bit longer, as a result. But will only return if another discount voucher comes our way.

Lovely setting

First time I?d played this course. Lovely setting and some really interesting holes including plenty of water. The condition of the course - a few greens wasn't what I?d expect for a top quality track. Overall, very enjoyable, wide fairways and quite forgiving at the time of my visit - so possible to score well whilst providing a test for better players.

Stunning Woodland

Played the Palmerston in testing conditions. Course was in good condition. Tees, fairways and rough were in well manicured condition. Greens were slightly slow but ran fairly true. Bunkers were well raked and tidy. A bit of cut grass lying about which looked a bit shabby but nonetheless a stunning course, and a fantastic layout. Challenging course.
