I have seen this cliff top course, overlooking the sea – which was always a delight to play – gradually improve and mature over time. It is now a course which is not only interesting, very scenic and decently challenging, but it is also one which has been thoughtfully improved - with often quite small, but usually wise and intelligent, changes to the layout and design. It has also been maintained to a high standard whenever I have visited.
The greens are usually in fine condition and, especially in the summer months, pretty quick. Whilst the surfaces are smooth and true, the greens are, for the most part, also undulating and require careful lining up of your putts. The fairways seem to get just a little narrower each year, and the semi rough a little more noticeable, but that might just be my personal impression as the passing years seem relentlessly to make the game generally that bit harder.
The views are a real panoramic delight – whether inland towards the hills and moors of Dartmoor, or along the beautiful Avon river estuary as it winds upstream from Bantham to Aveton Gifford; or out to sea, taking in the rolling surf and, for example, the magnificent sight of Burgh Island and the tiny fishing port of Hope Cove. Wherever you look, in fact, if you can raise your eyes from the course itself, delightful vistas abound.
The clubhouse always offers the visitor a genuinely warm welcome, a good bar and simple but appealing, and well prepared, food.
The welcome is also evident in the pro shop, which is well stocked with a wide variety of clubs, clothing and accessories.
The green fees are fair and reasonable and offer excellent value, especially when the charm and quality of the course are taken into account.
Although it is a course that is well protected by sea breezes, good bunkering and numerous bushy trees, it is also a fair test of golf – so that it can be played and enjoyed by high and low handicappers alike. I would suggest that it has something for everyone – and, if you have happen to suffer one of those poorer golfing days which afflict us all, then you still have the pleasure of enjoying a beautiful walk in delightful surroundings.
If you are in, or anywhere near, the “South Hams” of Devon, why not give it a try? If necessary, take a little detour and try it out. I suspect that, like me, you will enjoy it.

Wide Fairways help
Played this course for the first time and had a good round by my standards.Upon arrival (16:10), we discovered that there is no food served after 4pm but undeterred we went out and ejoyed a very very good course. The fairways are nice and wide so forgiving to high handicappers.
The greens were in excellent condition and the views really make this a great course to play. Not expensive and the staff were very welcoming so I'll look forward to coming back again in the future.

Great course - very friendly
Lovely course to play in Devon. Feels short until you get to the 8th -11th then par 5's up hill (and into wind are tough). 12 onwards have great views of the coast and a good test of the short game. Very friendly club, people happy to chat and ask how things went and offer help on the way round. It was ladies captains day when we played and everyone looked very smart and even let us join in at the half way refreshments which was great. Really good value(Round played: Jun 2017 - Score: 93 Handicap: 11.9)

Beautiful course with amazing views out to sea across Bigbury and Bantham through the back 9. Tough first drive with road on left. Challenging par 5s up hill in to the wind (assuming its a prevailing south-westerly) and three long par 3s. Generally in fantastic condition with lovely greens.
