As a member I'm so shocked at how they have treated their staff this year, appalling. Now run by some members who haven't a clue sadly as everything is a complete shambles. Thank god for good green keeping staff who keep the course in good condition.

This club, founded in 1897, is situated on the Dorset coastal cliff between Christchurch and Lymington. The current 27 holes are a combination of the original Harry Colt design from 1932 and newer holes which were completed in 1992. There are 3 9hole loops each of which start and finish close to the clubhouse. Many forms of golfing challenge await the player from the shot over the water to the island green on Needles 9, to links style bump and run shots to the greens close to the coastline. Sea breezes and great views also add to an enjoyable test of golf.

The clubhouse is lovely, commanding superb views across the Solent to the Needles on the Isle of Wight, and along to Old Harry Rocks at Swanage. It is also situated overlooking the island green referred to above which can prove to be very entertaining!

Standard green fee for the day is £44 (good value for 27 holes) but the twilight rate of £24 is a bargain. Open events are also available - well run and sociable.

Great course

Played as a guest and, although still quite pricey at £35, was worth every penny. Drainage very good and so no mud at all and greens true and quick. However, very pricey to pay as a visitor unless you're used to playing such fees.
Has three courses of 9 holes and all have great views of the coast line and Isle of Wight.

Lovely golf course in glorious weather, 10/10 for the course, despite the recent maintenance which left the greens heavily holed and sanded. .
Unfortunately the staff in the pro-shop get 0/10. We verbally booked a 4 ball weeks ago and verbally confirmed again last week that we would be using County Cards. We were told County Card rate of £50 but we couldnt book an actual tee time (this is the system used by the club) as there was a members roll up until 10.30 - but we'd be ok to tee off around 10.30ish. Checked in and confirmed all of the above to be told:
1. our electronic County Cards werent acceptable, because it wasnt a County Card!!!. Obviously we explained that was nonesense,
2. then we're told we didnt have the Count Card rate it in writing
3. When i explained i confirmed it with the pro shop the week before - we were asked to name the person we spoke to on the phone - to be told that because i couldnt name the person i spoke to there was no record
4 The next excuse was , as we didnt have a booking we couldnt get the County Rate of £50 (but you cant book under their system)
5. Then we're finally told you cant use a County Card and get the reduced rate of £50 but had to pay £80.

So all in all a lovely days golf, but spoilt by a surly un-cooperative uniformed individual with attitude in the pro - shop.

Excellent

Just the perfect well maintained course. The best in the area. The day was a beautiful sunny day with far reaching views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. The course layout in my view is great and I wouldn't change a thing, slightly challenging for me but I like that. Enjoyed sitting in the Club House with those stunning views. Staff were friendly and food top notch.

Lovely setting

Lovely setting for the course looking out towards the Isle of Wight. 3 9's that criss-cross each other a bit, so it can be a bit of a challenge to work out where the next tee is. Played Needles/Stroller then Becton. Unfortunately it was the only good weather day forecast that week so all the members had turned out - you alternate on those starting off and those playing their second 9, and was a bit slow to start with due to this. Treated to a friendly welcome both in pro shop and clubhouse. Paid ?60 day rate.

This was a good day out with a new friend. the Welcome was short & sweet as we had to get on the course early because of a comp. The course was hard work as it was a first time visit, spotting the ball was a little hard due to the hazy light but the views of the Isle of Wight in the distance. I would probably like to play on the other 9 holes at the course to get a real feeling for this 27 course. The club facilities are 1st class with a great view from the balcony

27 holes at this club. We played A (Becton) and B (Needles) - par 72, SSS 69. In fabulous condition given the time of year, the fairways in particular a real joy to play from. Great views over the sea to the IOW. The wind usually blows here although today it was from from it's strongest. Spectacular clubhouse, with very welcoming staff.

Great course but windy

Fantastic day at Barton-on-Sea Golf Club. Beautiful new modern clubhouse with spectacular view across to Isle of Wight and Needles. We picked a very windy day (35mph gusts) which was a real challenge (needed driver for a 184yd par 3!). But loved it. Easy park and good food/drinks.

Excellent facilities, lovely clubhouse where we were made to feel very welcome, breakfast was very nice and at a reasonable price. Course in great condition even in the middle of winter. i know it was a weekend but i felt slightly over priced at ?70 especially being a four ball (a lot of courses give discount the more of you playing) . But would not hesitate to go back.

Loved it

Stunning views, great variety of holes (Played all 27), very challenging especially into the wind (which we were told by locals was just a breeze!). We played the first day after 4 hours of heavy rain and the courses dried up superbly - bunkers did not fill with water. All in all a lovely experience, though some lower handicappers might take issue with a few of the greens which could be better. But why do people NOT repair pitch marks! That does not help Will go again!

As a reasonably local course, this is one I've wanted to play for a while and it was a great day for it if you like to avoid the wind!
Typically a reasonable or very strong breeze here, it was exceptionally still for a clifftop course and a lot more scoreable as a result.

It's a 3 loops of 9 layout so I'll have to come back to take on the other 9 (I played Becton/Needles) but there are some lovely holes here with highlights for me of 2nd, 5th and 7th on Becton and then the 9th on Needles is particularly memorable as a bonafide island green par 3 finish. It's short even off whites at about 145 yards but I'm reliably informed that may need to be a 6 iron (instead of my 9) on a different day!

Beautiful location with great views of the Isle of Wight and back towards Christchurch so will always be worth a game for that, and at £25 as member's guest for twilight, thoroughly recommended.
