My one complaint is the same as the rest of the Ashbury courses, being a year-round resort with high traffic, the greens are very slow and a little bobbly. The fantastic scenery, general good condition of the course and mixture of holes more than make up for it though. If you're playing straight and think your way round the course, it is more than possible to build a good score, but if you're wayward or having a bad day it can get nasty quite quickly! If you're booking a break at Ashbury, book a couple of rounds on this course!

What makes this place a stunning break for you and your family is well, in short everything. The enthusiasm of the staff in this hotel just cannot be put high enough on my list of accolades. Every single member of staff is dedicated to making your stay as comfortable and stress free as possible. I understand that one would expect a certain level of service but the efforts to which these guys and girls go to in order to make your break comfortable and enjoyable make me think they should all wear underpants over their trousers. The Hotel staff, pro shop staff, buggy maintenance team, facilities team/instructors, Kitchen and waiting staff were just unreal.
The activities and facilities available to you at the Ashbury make a nice change if you want a morning or afternoon without swinging a club. With various target sports, bowls, snooker/pool, swimming pool, saunas, racquet spots. There are also masseuses available to you should you require a rub down with a damp newspaper. The list just goes on and in short there is something for everybody.
If however you fancy something completely different the Hotels sister (The Manor) offers the opportunity of making stuff (pottery, painting and the like), more for the kiddies and has a few more sports and things to do away from the golf course. Although the Manor was nice I think because of the number of young families making noise and annoying the ethos of the place the level of service “felt” somewhat lacking. It is nice and very clever that they have managed to separate the ASBO families from us that want to enjoy some peace and tranquillity. In short I would recommend staying at the Ashbury and taking the 2 mile drive to the Manor.
Now. To the courses.
In general they are in good condition for this time of year. This is obviously helped by being given buggies and keeping the traffic on the course to a minimum, but careful management of the large societies, getting them to only be on one course and leaving the others free for other golfers must have a positive impact on the way these courses are managed.
You play off of proper tees whenever it is possible and to main greens unless otherwise indicated. From all of the courses I played over the week I only played to one alternative green. I did however play three “spare holes” to replace ones that had been closed for a refresh or were waterlogged.
The greens were quite slow, but again for Devon at this time of year I was just glad it didn’t snow.
The Courses are very well marked and signposted and it was a doddle finding your way round. Every hole has a wee sign indicating yardages from all tees (and mats) to both the main greens and the alternates, which again shows a really great attention to detail.
The courses in themselves provide an interesting challenge, and are all good. Every course has a couple of holes that have stuck in my memory (for good and bad reasons). The course planners however make some holes to appear very narrow whereas in fact the trees edging the rough are thin and the fairway wide enough to land a Lear Jet. But now I’m just clutching at straws.
I spent most evenings in the bar (surprise surprise) and it was a comfortable atmosphere meaning there wasn’t any issue with just sitting down and chatting with people. Over the course of the week I spoke to many people, couples and groups who have all been going to the Ashbury for years. With that amount of repeat custom it can’t be that bad and I will certainly be adding to that number next year.
In summary, if you are looking for a long weekend or longer at a golfing venue where you have choice of courses, activities and decent food and mega helpful staff then in my opinion look no further.

If your partner is not a golfer, they can be deposited at the Manor House Hotel - www.manorashbury.co.uk - 2miles away to do their own thing while you enjoy your round.

of the great team at the Ashbury, Green keepers are excellent always working on the course and the management team make the right decision when weather impacts the course. The courses offer different challenges and make your course management important to a successful round. Many holes are there for the more adventurous golfers and reward is great for your daring approach also. Overall it makes for a day of golf.
