Bit of a disaapointment overall

This has been on my hit list to play for ages.
So while expectations were high, it was a shame to have an overall disappointing experience.
The course was generally in good condition and was fun to play, however the greens were a little inconsistent in pace.
The pace of play was slow and frustrating that this wasn't managed on course.

The service experience off the cost was below par. The pro-shop experience on arriving at the course was good, however the club seems to be set-up fo the hotel guests at the Marriot hotel. There was no readily accessible breakfast service for day guests. We had to find' or way to the 'Zest' restaurant in the hotel.
After having played, the lunch offer was average at best, with insufficient staff to manage the numbers coming off the course in a timely manner.

Glad to have the Tee-shirt, but we wont be rushing back.

weather cloudy to start with but improved, local competition being played and was held up by 3 lady players who because of a lost ball eventually called us through, other problem encountered having to wait for the green keepers to finish mowing around greens before shots were played

Old Course to be avoided on Friday mornings. Played Friday 7th August. Front 9, fine, then got held up by a Seniors Comp starting on the 10th Tee, took over an hour to play next 3 holes! Walked off in frustration. The starter said they were known for being slow, but did nothing to manage the situation. Totally unacceptable. Shame the Old Course itself is worth a visit. The changing rooms/showers are also not typical of a Marriott, big disappointment.

Fantastic layout and the greens are in better condition than for some time. However this course is always let down by the speed of play !!! Its a tough championship course but the tee times don't reflect this and are too closely packed. Expect a 5hr round, which is disappointing.

Just come back from two days playing the "Old" course. While a great looking course and some great views, couldn't help feel let down by the condition of the course. There were good greens and bad greens, very hard to play consistently when the greens can differ from one hole to the next, also the fairways seemed to be a bit long in places. I think some TLC over the coming months could solve these issues and bring this course to the forefront again. It must be hard to complete with Celtic Manor being just a few miles away.
The hotel itself was very good, the staff were polite and welcoming, food was very good and the drinks reasonably priced (For a Hotel!). The major disappointment came on the second day. After a very hearty breakfast our group assembled outside the pro shop for our final round, and it seemed they had slipped in another society in front of our tee time, so there were 24 of us thinking we would be teeing off at 10.30 but with four 4-balls infront of us just about to tee off. After some choice words with the starter 3 of our groups teed off from the 10th and 3 waited to tee off on the 1st. 5 and half hours it took for me to complete my round starting on the first, a little too long than it should, luckily I had a buggy to sit and wait in. While I understand that courses need to make money, they also need to understand that people won't return if it takes half a day to play 18 holes. I will return to this course and hope the greenkeepers have given it the respect it deserves.
