SO/ Sotogrande - A New Costa del Sol Golf Break Destination
When holidaymakers think of Spain, Costa del Sol is likely to be close to the forefront of their imagination. This coastal region hugs the Mediterranean Sea and is renowned for its climate and immaculate beaches that make it the perfect destination for those in search of sunshine and relaxation.
It's also quite the place for a golf break too, boasting many resorts and acclaimed courses to pick from. Representing something of a new offering for the area, SO/ Sotogrande was opened in 2021 and has already drawn significant praise from visitors who have enjoyed its luxury facilities and the comfortable access it features to the on-site Almenara Golf Course.
Our travel partners, Golfbreaks, have already featured attractive packages to this superb venue that is situated just 30 minutes north of Gibraltar Airport and an hour away from Malaga Airport, including a stay and play deal for three nights and two rounds of golf from just £425.
Enjoying a picturesque location between the Andalusian Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, SO/ Sotogrande is a luxurious resort and spa that first welcomed guests in 2021 - and they have been gratefully arriving ever since.
Positioned within the Sotogrande Hills, the resort consists of 152 elegantly presented guestrooms that all provide modern facilities. Each room has a private terrace from which you can enjoy the beautiful gardens or panoramic views across the golf course and the Mediterranean.
During your stay at SO/ Sotogrande, you have the opportunity to choose between a fantastic selection of bars and restaurants, offering everything from traditional cuisine to barbecue and fine dining. MIXO is the hotel’s contemporary and fun establishment with the best combination of a lively club and a chic lounge, while others will prefer the tranquility of the Club House, which is a favourite of the locals.
For a touch of serenity, guests can sample the SO/ Spa, which is considered to be among the best luxury health wellbeing centres in Sotogrande and Costa del Sol. The spa offers eight dedicated spa rooms with natural therapies, a modern cosmetology, three SO/ SPA treatment cabins, Cryotherapy, Flotion and Physio rooms, in addition to Thermal and Hydro pools.
While staying at the SO/ Sotogrande, you can take full advantage of access to the exclusive El Cucurucho Beach Club, while also having the chance to explore the local area and discover its many activities and intriguing sites.
Considering all of that; it's easy to see why this venue has already become a favoured base for visitors!
The Golf Courses
Naturally, from its location in Sotogrande, those staying at the resort can easily travel to the likes of 1997 Ryder Cup venue Valderrama, La Reserva de Sotogrande, and the 2023 Solheim Cup host Finca Cortesin, presenting a spectacular choice of courses for keen golfers to experience.
However, we are going to focus specifically on Almenara Golf Course, which is part of the resort's grounds. This is a 27-hole parkland first designed by the revered Dave Thomas, showcasing three loops of nine that come together in any combination to provide an entertaining layout that benefits from a stunning landscape.
Breaking down this trio of individual loops, the tightest of the three is Los Pinos (Pines), with tree-lined fairways requiring a test of execution to successfully navigate. Los Lagos (Lakes) has a series of water hazards to contend with, and finally, Los Alcornoques (Corn Oaks) features some of the most dramatic holes on the course.
Whichever combination you choose, golfers are guaranteed breathtaking views and greens that are immaculate and well-maintained throughout the year.
Golfers and regular holidaymakers love to visit Costa del Sol and the recently unveiled SO/ Sotogrande is a fresh destination that enhances its surroundings and offers the perfect base from which to uncover the many delights available in this beautiful part of the world.
