Brought up next to the River Clyde in Scotland I avoided golf for the first 24 years of my life, mainly due to the tendency for the rain to blow horizontally past the window most of the year.
After failing my degree course (Chemical Engineering) at Strathclyde I joined Customs & Excise, was sent to Aberdeen and became a VATman. This was a slight surprise since I didn’t know Customs did VAT.
After a couple of years I applied to move to Customs’ IT section in Southend on Sea and, being successful, discovered it was in Essex rather than the South Coast as I originally thought. Whilst on the training course I was introduced to golf. I also managed to pass the bug onto my parents – then in their fifties.
During the past 20 years I have developed interests in cricket and geology, gained an OU degree, moved to the private sector (and back) and I am currently working in the Civil Service as a programme manager. The work is fine but it does take up a lot of time meaning I don't due as much practice as I should during the week. I also have a problem that I can't see where the golf ball goes if I start using the longer clubs. Probably need glasses.
