Family first for Day

Jason Day has revealed he would be ready to sacrifice his place at this year’s Open Championship should it coincide with the birth of the Aussie’s first child. Day’s wife Ellie is due to give birth on July 11, seven days before the start of the tournament at Lytham.

The world number seven has established himself as one of the world’s most exciting players, recording stunning second place finishes at last season’s Masters and US Open. However, the news that he may give up his place has seen his latest golf odds plummet.

There are many who believe the 24-year could step up this year and claim a maiden major title, although, Day has made it clear he won’t be willing to put his chance at the Open ahead of witnessing the birth of his first child.

The Aussie has insisted golf comes in second place behind family in his eyes, however, Day will certainly be hoping things work out, allowing him to make the season’s third major tournament.

“If the baby is coming that week, I will definitely be missing the British Open.”

“There is no way I will miss the birth of my first child. Golf is one thing but family is everything to me.”

“Golf isn't going to be there if I break my leg or if I lose the plot and forget how to swing a club - my family will be there. It's family first every time.”

Day has started 2012 in the same sort of form which he finished last year, climbing up to seventh in the rankings following his runner-up finish in Qatar last month. It surely seems only a matter of time, and something that would come with slim golf betting odds, before this 24-year old picks up that big win and reaches the top-5 in the world.
