Woods looks to bounce back

By Thomas Rooney on 09-Feb-2012

It has been a tough few years for one of the greatest ever golfers, both on and off the course.

Tiger Woods dominated golf for the best part of a decade, but has hit a lean patch in recent years and is without a major championship victory since winning the US Open in 2008.

During that time, the American star received worldwide media attention after details of his personal life became public knowledge. The sex scandal rocked Woods and he took an indefinite break from golf. He hasn’t been able to recapture his form since and has had to re-establish himself all over again, with little success. The best US Masters odds show he is still far from the force he was.

Woods burst on to the golfing scene in 1996 and wasted no time in stamping his authority on the game. He won his first major at the Masters a year later and soon became the number one golfer in the world.

Success followed success until he hit a barren spell in 2003 and 2004 when he failed to win a major. The slump didn’t last for long, though, and he went on to secure 14 major titles in total before his career hit the buffers in 2009.

Knee problems have hampered the 36-year-old over the past few years but he is fighting fit this year and has a new caddie on board in the form of Joe LaCava.
Woods began the season with an impressive showing in Abu Dhabi against a world-class field. He had a share of the lead going into the final day, but fell away to finish two shots behind eventual winner Robert Rock.

Woods’ first mission will be to end his long wait for a tournament win, spanning 26 official events going back to November 2009. From there, he will have his sights set on a 15th major.
