Olazabal named Ryder Cup captain

By Thomas Rooney on 19-Jan-2011

Jose Maria Olazabal has been named as Europe's 2012 Ryder Cup captain. The Spaniard has always been favourite for the role, but was confirmed in his position earlier today.

The Spaniard will be Colin Montgomerie’s successor as the leader and will take his European team to Illinois in September next year, looking to retain the Ryder Cup trophy.

There is certainly no doubt that Olazabal is passionate and knowledgeable about the Ryder Cup. He has played in the tournament seven times as well as being vice-captain in the last two.

He is used to success as well. During his playing days, the 44-year-old only lost 10 times from his 31 matches as he became one of the most consistent and reliable European players of all time.

Sports betting pundits were certainly always backing him to conquer his American opponent and will more than likely do so again next year. European golf is in better shape than ever, after all.

As for Olazabal’s thoughts on landing the role, he said: "Golf has been my life and representing Europe in the Ryder Cup has given me so much enjoyment.”

"So to be named the European Ryder Cup captain is something very special and I am looking forward to the next 20 months before we reach Medinah.”

The players will be looking forward to playing for such a respected man as well. Ian Poulter and Paul Casey have already spoken of their delight at the new captain as the countdown begins to the 39th Ryder Cup.
