Golf Shake (1.7)
Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom
| By Golf Shake on 24-Apr-2009 | |
With much anticipation Monday morning arrived. 60 golfers ready to battle it out for the North or South were welcomed with the usual coffee and bacon roll plus golf goody bags from golfshake.com comprising of: Nutrional tracker bar
After the pre match banter, stocking up on food and drink, everyone then headed over to the range to hit some complimentary balls courtesy of De Vere Wokefield Park. Event the golfshake.com team managed to get out on the range !! think it was much needed given Luke and Phil were going head to head
The battle was then ready to commence and saw the respective Captains tee off and get the game under way.
Throughout the day, Darren course marhsalled ensuring speedy play and keeping a sneaking watch on the scores. Everything was pretty much even throughout the course after 9 holes with a few groups 1 or 2 up but nothing a dead cert.
The first group came back in and saw a fantastic result to the South with a 7 and 6 start. The second group and the golfshake.com battle saw Phil and Lee edging out Luke and Martin for a North 2 and 1 win. Overall 1 each.
The next 3 groups saw 3 wins for the South and the South open a lead. Groups 7 and 8 also went to the South with the South now 6 1/2 to 1 1/2 and the game beginning to look all over. But with 7 games still playing there was a long way to go and now was the time for the Captains to hit the course in buggies to gee up the troops. The North finished with a great 6 and 5 in group 9 after being all square through 9 and meant the North were now trailing 4 points with 6 to play. Group 11 came in with a 5 and 4 result to the south and now saw the result at 7 1/2 to 3 1/2 to the South. At best the North could draw the score and retain the trophy with the 4 remaining matches. Again the Captains headed out and the call back was the North lead in 3 and were down by 3 with 5 to play in one match. Unfortunately despite some valant efforts by all the remaining teams the South ran away with 9 points to the Norths 6 and took the title for the first year.
Tim Hawkins then handed over the trophy to the Southern Captain David Marshall. Best team pair awards went to: North - Jack Smilie and Neil Beech (5 up with 5 to play but left it until the 17th to secure the win) South - David Ley and Kevin Hewitt (closest match up went right down to the final hole to secure the South result in Group 3)
The individual competition saw prizes from Golfshake.com , Golfbreaks.com, the new Srixon Z-Stars golf balls plus the bragging rights. Once again after the Sunday's results 10 players came in with more than 36 points. Invidiual Winner - James Marshall 2nd Place - Dean Wood 3rd Place - Stephen Chapman Nearest the pin - Lee Butler (6 feet on an 180yard hole) Longest drive - Stuart Laws (measured at around 310 yards)
View the Stableford results View the North vs South photos
Until next year. Hope you all enjoyed.

The Sunday before - North vs South 2009 By Golf Shake on 24-Apr-2009
With the anticipation building for the North vs South 2009, it was no suprise that 39 golfers turned out to hone their skills and test the course in readiness for the event on Monday. Definately an event Darren organised with glorious weather, blue skies and sunshine! Wokefield Park is a testing course and almost 2 courses in one. Tough rough, challenging bunkers and reasonable length off the yellow tees. Despite this 7 golfers came in with over 36 points scoring better than their handicap. http://www.golfshake.com/golf/view/1/scores/ Those staying over then changed and freshened up before meeting up for the evening meal and a few drinks.
After Ben King and Luke Tricker were presented with their prizes and a sleeve of golf balls from the new Srixon Z-Star range the night moved on to a golf quiz. Colin, the man beind the Gtour , set the questions and we were all lucky to scrap more than 4 points from 20. Despite Dave Ley reporting to have scored 19 Martin Millichip walked away with top prize and a respectable 12 points. If you want to see how you would do check this forum post out - http://www.golfshake.com/forums/view/3794/NvS_Quiz_How_many_would_you_have_got_right.html

North vs South 2009 - Course Information By Golf Shake on 14-Apr-2009
Wokefield Park is an 18 hole, 6,996 yard championship golf course designed to PGA standards. This superb parkland layout boasts elevated tees, mature trees, streams and nine lakes providing a challenging game to golfers of all standards in a beautiful countryside setting. The venue should provide a great setting and test in this eagerly anticipated event on the golfshake.com events calendar. Course overview:
Member reviews: On first impressions when you look at it from the clubhouse it looks fairly open, however when you start to play it you quickly realise that it is a fine championship course, with a lot water and well placed sand traps. It is a tough and interesting course especially when the rough is left to grow! It is also a great place for a golf break, and very reasonably priced. I have played it many times and have enjoyed every round. Excellent venue for an overnight stay. Played the course twice. A tough course and good condition generally. A good hotel and nice parkland course. Suberb and challenging course with some long par 5's Excellent course, with a fair bit of water. Excellent facilities
