Bloomin trees...

By Andy Kenyon on 03-Mar-2008

A great day out at Donnington Grove today in the first Golfshake event of 2007.  Thanks to Darren and the guys for organising and my playing partners for making it an entertaining round.

The 18th was memorable for a couple of reasons.  Being the longest drive I felt obliged to use my driver for only the second time in the round and were the prize for the highest altitude drive then I would have won hands down going far further vertically than horizontally.

My second, a great 3 wood strike off the fairway went straight and true and, passing by a bunker, it rolled up to, and then up, the big tree on the left of the fairway and disappeared from view.  Close inspection revealed its final resting place 3 feet up the trunk.  I contemplated playing it ( for a nanosecond) before declaring it unplayable and taking a drop and penalty.  Photo of the lie below.

Did you play it where it lay?

I considered it.  It was about waist height.  As it was, the drop, being in line between ball and pin, was directly behind the tree so I had to just punch it onto the fairway.

If it makes you feel better Andy, at the end of season cup last year my tee shot on the par 3 second hit high in a tree 20 yards down, bounced down through the branches and dropped behind it.  I chipped out, although not quite as far as I would have liked.  I promptly shanked my third shot into the next tree along, bounced down through the branches and left the ball in a similar position to yours about two foot off the ground.  A drop, a nine iron and a chip later I was on the green for 6.  A good putt from 8 feet saved some embarassment, but the bar was set and I consisently suceeded in lowering it throughout the round before coming last.

I did wonder what Andy and Kev were doing behind that tree.
