Well That Wasn't So Bad Now, Was It?

By Edward Norrey on 19-Apr-2012

As I mentioned in my previous entry, I was dreading the first 18 hole round of the season.  Anyway, off we went (Brian and me), to Owmby Golf Club as usual for a Sunday.  The first game of the season.  I was very nervous on the first tee.  The first hole is a 329 yard par 4, so it's not really an intimidating hole.  I made great contact with my first shot but unfortunately it drew slightly and landed in the pond on the left of the fairway.  Had the pond not been there, it would have been a super shot.

I wasn't really dwelling on the shot, I was more interested in the way I struck the ball, and that put me in a good mind set for the round.

I was hitting the ball very well.  The problem was I just could not score.  My round was 87 (gross 17 over par).  Inside 60 yards, I was just throwing shots away.  My putting was fine (32 putts for the round), and I found almost every fairway.  I only hit 2 greens in regulation which clearly shows my short game was off.  However, I left my mark on the course with my favourite shot of them all.  The flop shot.  It was the 18th hole, my tee shot had found the centre of the fairway, and I had no hazards in front of me.  So I thought to myself, what the heck, I'll just go for it.  I was about 50 yards away from the flag, and I took out my pitching wedge.  I opened my stance and the club face ever so slightly, and just took a calm but accurate swing at the ball.  It felt beautiful!  The ball came rocketing off the club face and right in the air, and wouldn't you know, the ball landed within 12 inches from the flag and stopped dead.  It was definitely the best shot within 60 yards I had ever played in my life.

So to summarise, my tee shots were good, my putting was fine, and if my short game was as good as it was on the 18th hole, I would've had a new personal best!  It just goes to show you that if you have the right attitude for a shot, you may surprise yourself.
