Hend takes one-shot lead into final round at BMW PGA Championship

By: Emga (East Midlands Golf Academy) | Sat 28 May 2016

Australian Scott Hend will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the BMW PGA Championship after an incredible eagle on the final hole on day 3. Hend was three over for his round until he made only the second eagle of the day at 18 to claim the top spot.

After making three bogies in a row through holes 13, 14 and 15 it was looking like a day to forget for Hend but his eagle at the last could insti a bit more confidence in the two-time European Tour winner.

It was a day to forget for his playing partner and co-leader at the beginning of play Danny Willet.  The current Masters Champion had flashbacks to his final two rounds at the Irish Open last week as he shot a four over par 76 to fall down to a tie for fifth.

Tyrell Hatton will be one-shot off the lead going into the final day at Wentworth after a six under par round of 66. It was the Englishman’s impressive back nine that shot him to the up the leaderboard and his six under par round was also the best of the day.

The 24-year-old had a steady front nine with two birdies on holes three and six, but was pegged back by a bogey in between the two at the fifth hole. It was the 11th hole where his round really got going. Hatton made back-to-back-to-back birdies on 11, 12 and 13 to shoot up the leaderboard. Birdies on 16 and 17 topped off what was an outstanding round.

Lee Westwood and Y.E. Yang will start their rounds just two shots behind the leader going into the final round despite both players having very different days on the course. Westwood was one of the highest movers on the day as he climbed 16 places after a four under par 68.

The Englishman’s card was faultless as he patiently made a move up the leaderboard. Westwood birdied the fourth hole for the third consecutive day and followed it up with a birdie at the par 3 fifth hole. After 11 straight pars, Westwood then finished his round with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to finish at -7. Westwood is currently eight under par for the par 5’s on Wentworth’s West Course and will need to keep this up if he is to take home the spoils.

It was a mixed day for Yang who shot three over par to drop to -7 for the three rounds. The former major winner’s day started poorly with a bogey at the first hole for the second time this week. He did claw it back with a birdie at three but bogies on five and nine saw the South Korean card a two over par front nine.

He started the back nine in a similar fashion to how he started his front nine. His bogey at 10 was chalked off by a birdie two holes later at 12 but a bogey at 15 saw Yang finish at -7.

Julien Quesne and Chris Wood will be two players to look out for in the final round as they both sit just three shots back after rounds of 67 (Quesne) and 68 (Wood) respectively.

Today’s golf showed that anyone who is with in four or five shots of the lead has a chance to become a BMW PGA champion. It is sure to be thrilling final round with so many good players in contention with 18 holes to play.
