Horton Smith won what was then called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament in 1934, when 73 players competed for a first prize of $1,500. The club could not afford the prize fund until 17 members chipped in. Jordan Spieth won $1.8million for his victory in 2015
Co-founder Bobby Jones objected to calling it The Masters Tournament, thinking it was presumptuous, but relented and the name was used from 1939 onwards
Yorkshire-born architect Alister Mackenzie designed Augusta National, but died two months before the inaugural tournament.
The green jacket awarded to Masters champions was first worn by club members in 1937, so that fans could easily spot them if they needed to ask questions
Champions are meant to leave their jackets at Augusta, but many have taken them home
Augusta National was forced to close for more than two years during the second world war, with the land being used to raise turkeys and cattle
The winner of the par-three contest has never won The Masters in the same year
Arnie’s Army, the nickname for fans of Arnold Palmer, derives from troops from nearby Fort Gordon who were recruited to run the scoreboards during Palmer’s first Masters win in 1958
Fuzzy Zoeller is the last player to win The Masters on debut, beating Ed Sneed and Tom Watson in a play-off in 1979. Charl Schwartzel (2011) and Spieth (2015) both won on their second appearance. Spieth also finished second on his debut in 2014
Tiger Woods is the youngest champion, winning in 1997 at the age of 21 years, three months, 14 days
Spectators, who are referred to as “patrons”, are warned that “Cell phones, cellular capable devices, beepers, electronic devices and tablets are strictly prohibited on the grounds at all times”. Members of the media are not allowed to take such devices out of the media centre.
Amen Corner refers to the second half of the 11th hole, the par-three 12th and the first half of the par-five 13th. It was coined by journalist Herbert Warren Wind in 1958
The Masters is the only major golf tournament in which the yardage of each hole is rounded off to end in “5” or “0.” Co-founder Clifford Roberts felt that an exact yardage was irrelevant due to the movement of tee markers and pin positions
The Masters is the only major played on the same course every year
The US and British Amateur champions are entitled to stay in the Crow's Nest, an attic room at the top of the Augusta clubhouse
