Stoke Park To Re-Open Historic Harry Colt Designed Nine Holes

By: Golfshake Editor | Fri 12 Feb 2016

The 2016 season at Stoke Park Golf Club will begin on the 22nd of April, with members helping to relaunch the course's historic first nine-holes - the Colt Course - in a shotgun start tournament.

Dating back to 1908 and designed by the legendary Harry Colt, the nine-hole loop, which bears his name, has been closed for the winter while it underwent some reshaping of its bunkers. Every bunker on the front nine holes has been completely re-shaped and rebuilt with the inclusion of a bunker liner.

The course will re-open with an 18-hole ‘shotgun start’ tournament for members, followed by an official ‘launch’ evening, with a drinks reception; a presentation from the club’s director of golf, Stuart Collier – including an update on future course and facility upgrades; the introduction of the new 2016 captains and committees; an update from the academy covering coaching programmes, forthcoming golf trips and the scholarship programme; and a buffet and free bar until midnight, with the whole event being sponsored by Greece’s number-one golf resort, Costa Navarino.

There will also be a short presentation to the members from Alexander Devine children’s hospice service which has been chosen as the members’ charity for the second successive year.

The golf club – one of several clubs within a club at the multi-award-winning, five-star Stoke Park Country Club, Spa & Hotel – still has available seven-day golf memberships, with the price held for 2016 at £3,500pa. Laid out across 300 acres of mid-19th century, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown-landscaped parkland, the 27-hole, Colt-designed course is one of the country’s leading parkland layouts, with its picturesque seventh hole, providing the inspiration for the original 16th at Augusta National, home of the Masters.

Founded in 1908 as the UK’s first country club, Stoke Park – one of just two five AA Red Star golf clubs in England – combines the traditions of an exclusive members’ club and the best of today’s sporting, leisure, entertaining and hotel facilities.

Those facilities include the historic 27-hole golf course; 13 tennis courts, comprising indoor, grass and floodlit artificial clay – as used by many of the world’s top players, such as Novak Djokovic, during the annual Boodles tournament; an award-winning spa; indoor pool; state-of-the-art gymnasium; fitness, hot yoga and spinning studios; three restaurants, including the three AA Rosette-winning Humphry’s; and 49 bedrooms and suites.

Set within 300 acres of beautiful private parkland estate in Stoke Poges, Bucks, Stoke Park is only 35 minutes from London and seven miles from Heathrow Airport.
