Tiger Woods and Ernie Els Duel at Kapalua in 2000

By: Golfshake Editor | Thu 07 Jan 2016

This year, the Tournament of Champions at the stunning Kapalua has drawn its best field in many editions, with Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson all in action. It is a reminder of what the event once was, assembling all of the PGA Tour tournament winners from the previous years, with some thrilling finishes.

Arguably the best of them came in 2000, as a young Tiger Woods dueled a determined Ernie Els on the back-nine of the beautiful course, eventually having to settle the dramatic contest in a playoff. It was a brilliant way to begin the new golfing millennium.

At the time, many believed that this would be the start of a rivalry that could define an era in the game, but Tiger would break away that year and achieve the most extraordinary things - winning three majors, including the U.S. Open by 15 shots and the Open Championship by a comparatively "medicore" eight. Els, like everyone else, was caught up in that maelstrom.
