By: | Wed 30 Dec 2015

Motocaddy are recognised as one of the leading brands in the electric trolley market and 2015 saw them launch a new flagship model - The S7 Remote. Golfshake Contributor, Andrew Picken recently headed to Morley Hayes Golf Club to put the trolley to test.

What Motocaddy say:

The first remote control model in the Motocaddy range boasts one of the trolley sector’s most sophisticated guidance systems, utilising two motors to provide a combination of power and precision, plus an anti-tip wheel to ensure stability on the most challenging golf course terrains.

IDEAL FOR : Golfers looking for an intelligent remote model with exceptional control

Golfshake Motocaddy S7 Review

Looks

The Motocaddy S7 Remote trolley features a striking orange trim, which definitely enhances the style. It was provided with the matching new style bag which I was very impressed with giving lots of room and storage whilst maintaining great looks. I like the external putter port and the colours were striking in design and palette.

Battery and set-up

The trolley features an standard range lithium battery and following a full charge and testing out all the features over 18 holes, there was plenty of battery life remaining, so it may have been able to complete a few more holes.

When folded the trolley is easy to move into and out of a vehicle boot and is surprisingly light given the capacity of the machine. The colour scheme of orange piping matches the wheels and new bag line and looks striking but was very easy to clean after a very muddy and wet round of golf.

Handset

It is well designed. It fits into the palm easily. The dual pressure left and right buttons genuinely enhance the steering aspect, correcting for any slight veering subtly but effectively. The reverse or ‘down’ button seemed more sensitive than the others, requiring a firm touch rather than an actual push. This remote can be housed in a trolley mounted pouch that falls easily to hand when playing shots and is an excellent feature missing on other rival products in the same price range.

Ease of use

Using the remote to steer was fun to use and quick to grasp. It also has the option of switching to manual mode in case you lose the remote,or it runs out of battery. I will be honest and say that the remote function is such fun that I did not use this function until returning to the clubhouse where it was then much easier to manoeuvre the trolley around the clubhouse for cleaning etc using this feature.

The ability to complete both soft and sharp turns certainly makes the trolley easy to navigate. The directional controls are made through the front wheels and this makes any turns smooth and having less impact on the turf than some systems that use a wheel braking system to affect turns.

I passed it one of my playing partners to use without briefing and he was able to use the unit safely within seconds. This is a sophisticated system that has many features but it is well enough designed to allow “build and play” use straight out of the box. This is an excellent design.

I found it useful in a multitude of situations, mostly looking for balls in the rough, saving valuable time.

On-course testing of the Motocaddy S7 Remote

The Tilt function, which compensates for lateral slopes is excellent and is actually really practical. Set it before play then be reassured that when you do encounter a slope or side hill, the trolley will track much straighter and safer. The downhill control feature is also a positive one, as it maintains a constant speed down slopes rather than getting away from you or pulling you like conventional electric trolleys.

After 45 seconds there is a cut out facility as a safety feature. Watch out if you are used to having to walk closely to your trolley to control it as I managed to walk into the unit as it stopped unexpectedly. After a short time I got more confident in the range of control and this was not an issue I repeated.

The overall experience was very good. I felt it enhanced my pace of play. An ability to move the trolley safely to the next tee whilst putting was a real benefit and helped the whole group maintain a positive pace of play. Setting it to match my walking pace was also easy in comparison to other models and it made for a very relaxed round of golf, reducing fatigue.

Pros

I would happily add this to my golfing wish list as it's easy to use, very practical and helping, not distracting from the business at hand, this is an excellent product.

Cons

If you are used to having to keep close to your trolley be careful as there is a safety cut out that kicks in when no commands have been given for 45 seconds. If you are walking directly behind the trolley watch out for the collision. After a very short time I became confident enough in the item to have it far enough away from me to not be an issue but the first time it happened it caught my attention...... and something else!

Price for some will be an issue. This is a premium product that is brilliantly designed and delivered and will give great service adding to your game not distracting from it. .

The Bottom Line

I would love to own one of these products and as I believe it would enhance my game. The trolley caused a lot of interest from others in the group and it was a definite talking point in the post round de-brief in the bar. It retails at £799.00 providing all the features that you would wish from a lithium golf trolley. Well built, excellent warranty, great design and ease of use mean I rate it very highly.

Overall, the Motocaddy S7 Remote was a real pleasure to use. This is a superb product. It’s quick and easy to put together and the remote control feature soon becoming second nature. It is also lighter and more portable than I expected being easy to move from the car.

Using the unit caused quite a stir amongst my playing partners and other golfers on the course. It was not long before price came up and the relative value of this item. To be honest it is not cheap and I can only describe it as the best remote control trolley I have used. Is it worth £799.00? That depends on individual circumstances but certainly it will go on my 'dream wish list' of golfing products.

Golfshake Rating - 9/10
