Wyndham Championship Preview, Picks & Analysis

By: Golf Shake | Mon 17 Aug 2015

THE Wyndham Championship is most notable for giving players a last-gasp chance to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs, and an opportunity to retain their tour cards. It is the final regular event of the 2014-15 PGA Tour season and is massive for several players.

As things stand, Tiger Woods is in the field, knowing that only a victory will give him a place in the playoffs - if he fails to make it, his season is effectively over. But do not be surprised if he withdraws. This has been a truly miserable year for the American, whose world ranking has sunk like a stone in 2015.  For the first time in his career, he has missed the cut at three successive majors. To be honest, there would appear to be little point in him playing as his chances of winning are slim to non-existent.

Also  in the field is Adam Scott, another who has had a year to forget. He is 90th in the FedEx Cup standings and at some stage soon he has a major issue to confront - on January 1, anchored putting will be banned. Scott has tried to use a regular putter this season and failed so spectacularly with it that he returned to the broomhandle.

There are other big names struggling to make the playoffs and they have decided to play here too. Last year, Camilo Villegas ended a four-year drought when he won here 12 months ago, but  Sangmoon Bae was the only player to move inside the top 125 and into the FedEx Playoffs.

This time Villegas is 126th, while former world No1 Luke Donald is 134th. In the past five years, nobody has come to Greensboro for the Wyndham outside the top 135 on the points list and moved into the qualifying positions. And that means history is against Woods.

Ernie Els is another with history against him. He has never failed to finish the season inside the top 125 and will play at Greensboro, starting the week in 168th place.

Ollie Schneiderjans, the former amateur world No1, has a sponsors' invitation and will look to continue the promising start he has made to his professional career. Schneiderjans played brilliantly in The Open and has all the tools to win a lot of tournaments.
