Mizuno launch S5 Blue Magic Wedges

By: Golf Shake | Thu 23 Jul 2015

Mizuno, the Japanese golf equipment manufacturer has unveiled its new S5 wedges in a striking Blue IP or White Satin finishes, offering unprecedented levels of greenside performance.

Mizuno, founded in Osaka, Japan, in 1906, has long held an enviable industry for producing scoring clubs that look great, perform superbly and offer  a great blend of feel, control and workability. For many years, the brand’s highly acclaimed wedges have helped both the world’s greatest players, and aspiring club golfers to significantly enhance their up-and-down percentages.

The brand’s latest S5 wedges have been precision-engineered to spin a little #BlueMagic into your wedge game courtesy of a stunning new Blue IP finish that’s designed to wear over time without reducing the durability of the plating itself. The S5 wedges will also be available in Mizuno’s White Satin finish, which has proved extremely popular for many years now.

For a wedge to play right, it also has to look right, and the S5’s score so highly here that short-game maestro, Luke Donald, had no hesitation putting them in play almost immediately at this year’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. The former World No.1 may currently top the PGA Tour’s stats for proximity from the sand, and feature in the Top 10 for scrambling from the fringe, but the S5’s performance benefits have been designed to meet the needs of everyone from top tour pro to mid-handicapper, thanks to the ingenuity of Mizuno’s highly experienced engineers.

“These S5 wedges are more of a midsize profile, so there’s a lot more clubface for fuller shots,” says Chris Voshall, Mizuno cub engineer. “They’re less intimidating when you’re faced with 95 yards from a less-than-perfect lie. They went straight into Luke Donald’s bag in May, which suggests we did a pretty good job with the sole grinds and versatility around the greens.”

The S5’s boast an enticing midsize profile, with sharply visible and highly versatile sole grinds, as advocated by Luke Donald. These grinds have been expressly designed to fuel the golfer’s imagination and creativity around the greens, keeping all options open from a wide variety of lies. The profile and sole grinds combine with a slightly rounded leading edge that allows the wedges to be opened or closed while still aligned to target for maximum adaptability.

The demands of full-wedge and greenside shots are very different, a fact not lost on Mizuno’s expert designers. The S5 wedges are designed to provide high spin right across the loft range thanks to Quad Cut Grooves, which are CNC-milled after forging to ensure every wedge sits just inside R&A and USGA limits. Wider shallower grooves from 54 to 62 degrees, and deeper narrower grooves from 49 to 53 degrees ensure maximum spin on both full and partial shots for ultimate control, feel and workability.

Mizuno has been Grain Flow Forging its iron and wedge heads for 30 years, a process that compresses and maintains a consistent grain through the neck and hosel, guaranteeing both greater consistency and the precise distance control that’s so crucial in the wedge game. The S5 wedge heads are Grain Flow Forged from a single billet of 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon steel, with the Blue IP finish promising to add a little #bluemagic to your wedge game.

From an original spirit and desire to “create the best products for consumers”, Mizuno has become recognised the world over as the clear leader in golf club forgings, with its Grain Flow Forged irons and wedges still manufactured in Hiroshima, Japan. S5 offers the best wedge performance benefits that modern technology can bring, while still adhering to the spirit and desire that the brand has held so dear for nearly 110 years. #NothingFeelsLikeAMizuno.
