Open Day 3 Update

By: Golf Shake | Sat 18 Jul 2015

Post by Sports Writer Derek Clements

WE ARE all dressed up and ready to go here at St Andrews, but no play has been possible since 7.32am due to strong winds.

With 14 groups still to complete their second rounds, the R&A have announced that no play will be possible until 3pm at the earliest. Play was abandoned this morning almost as soon as it began, but there was enough time for Dustin Johnson to drop a shot at the par-five 14th and fall back to nine under, in a tie with Danny Willett, who safely completed his second round yesterday afternoon.

Johnson had the option of completing the hole on Friday night, but chose not to. He was just short of the green in two but his third reached the top of the mound that protects the green and rolled back to his feet. He required three further shots from there to get the ball in the hole.

Paul Lawrie is eight under with five holes to play. He is one ahead of Marc Warren, Zach Johnson, Adam Scott, Robert Streb and Louis Oosthuizen - all are safely in the clubhouse apart from Oosthuizen, who still has six holes to play.

The plan is get the second round completed as quickly as possible, but that is unlikely to be before 5.30pm. As things stand, the R&A expect to start the third round today but, clearly, the leaders are highly unlikely to get near the first tee before darkness falls at around 9.40pm.

It means that we are looking at a Monday finish - and that will only happen if there is a big improvement in the weather.

Jordan Spieth and Lee Westwood both expressed astonishment that play had started at all. Right from the start, golf balls were being blown off the 11th green, which is the most exposed part of the course. But the R&A insisted that the Old Course was playable. Those sitting in the media centre listening to the roof being buffeted all morning long, were rather more cynical.

Update 14:20

The latest from the Old Course is that they hope to resume play at 4pm and complete the second round today.

The third round will be played tomorrow and the final round on Monday.

Update 15:45

The latest from the Old Course is that the wind still shows no sign of abating. We were hoping that play would resume at 4pm, but the R&A have announced that there will be no action before 5pm at the earliest.

The third round will still be completed tomorrow, with the final round being completed on Monday. This will be only the second Monday finish in the history of The Open. The only other time it happened was in 1988, when Seve Ballesteros produced a final round of 65 at Royal Lytham to win his third Open.

Everybody at St Andrews will be hoping that this tournament produces a finish to match that one.

Update 16:35
