Golphinforkids gets R&A Swingzone Backing

By: Golf Shake | Mon 11 May 2015

Golphinforkids - the innovative new concept in golf clubs for children - has been chosen by The R&A for its Swingzone area at this year's Open Championship.

The R&A Swingzone is one of the most popular activities at The Open Championship and is designed to promote golf to all levels from beginners to scratch golfers. Adults and kids of all ages can come along and book a lesson with a qualified PGA professional free of charge.

Last year, 22 PGA Professionals helped to deliver more than 3,000 free 15 minute lessons during the week and Golphinforkids clubs were tried and tested by hundreds of youngsters.

Duncan Weir, the R&A Executive Director- Working for Golf, commented: “The R&A purchased Golphinforkids equipment and used it at last year’s Open Championship and it proved very popular - so we will be offering it again at  St Andrews in July.

“The high quality and versatility of the Golphinforkids kit is very impressive.  It is certainly well geared for getting youngsters into golf and helping to address the undoubted participation issues the sport is currently facing here in Great Britain and Ireland.

“Getting youngsters interested in playing sport is admirable and, within golf, many people are doing their very best.  One such example is Calum McPherson whose Golphinforkids product range is making a significant impact."

Owned and manufactured by Ayrshire-based Golphin Ltd,  Golphinforkids clubs are the brainchild of Scotland-based businessman Calum and were developed in partnership with PGA professionals and biomechanics experts at Strathclyde University, Golphinforkids clubs are unlike any other.

With aerospace engineering and design at their core, they are 30% lighter and more forgiving than conventional junior clubs, with a 35% larger sweet spot. As a result, children find it much easier to learn to swing properly, keep balanced throughout the swing, make a positive contact with the ball and get it airborne.

On being selected by The R&A, Calum said: "We are honored to be selected as the clubs to be used by PGA professionals at the Swingzone for the second year running. It’s fantastic to play our part in helping kids get in to golf properly from the very beginning.

“St Andrews is a very special place for golfers from all around the world and as a Scottish company, to be playing our part in The Open Championship at the Home of Golf, makes us very proud indeed.

"The Swingzone is all about teaching the basic fundamentals and enjoyment of golf. Our clubs help do that because they are designed to help kids to learn a proper technique from the very beginning."

Golphinforkids clubs are grouped in age and height brackets 3-5 (40-45"), 6-7 (45-50"), 8-9 (50-55") and 10-11 (55-60”). Clubs are available individually and in sets include a high loft driver, 7 iron, putter and 'Swedger' , a super high loft club designed to pop the ball high up in to the air  - along with a bag and brand mascot Dolphin driver headcover.

To help PGA professionals with kids coaching, Golphinforkids offers golf pros a discounted  rate Coaching Pack which is made up of 12 clubs in a bag, customised to the needs of the age profile and heights of the kids.
