Tenerife courses short listed for the 2015 World Golf Awards

By: Golf Shake | Tue 07 Apr 2015

Golf in Tenerife is in the running for global recognition after two of its courses were shortlisted for the 2015 World Golf Awards, which will be held in Portugal later this year.

The award winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on Saturday, November 7 and Golf Las Américas and The Ritz-Carlton, Abama, have both been nominated to be named as ‘Spain’s Best Golf Course’.

Designed by European golf legend John Jacobs and measuring 6,617 yards, Golf Las Américas is situated in the heart of Playa de Las Américas, one of the most important tourist centres in the south of Tenerife, and is renowned for its excellent condition all-year-round.

The par-72 championship layout has hosted numerous high-profile professional and amateur events and stands out for its fantastic location in a natural amphitheatre facing the sea, with the course offering superb ocean views of the island of La Gomera.

Situated in the peaceful area of Guía de Isora in west Tenerife, the 18-hole course at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama, was created by Dave Thomas and provides a different challenge, with golfers required to negotiate 22 water hazards, hundreds of palm trees and more than 300 species of trees and plants of sub-tropical varieties.

Golfers can revel in stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and La Gomera from nearly all of its 18 holes, and the magnificent setting is matched by outstanding practice facilities including the Ritz-Carlton Abama Golf Academy, driving range and 12-acre practice area including three par-three holes designed specifically for beginners.

And there could be further reason for the two venues to celebrate at November’s World Golf Awards with Las Madrigueras, the partner hotel of Golf Las Américas, and The-Ritz-Carlton, Abama, also both shortlisted in the ‘Best Golf Hotel in Spain’ category.

“It’s a tremendous honour for both Golf Las Américas and Las Madrigueras to be nominated for the World Golf Awards,” said Brendan Breen, commercial director at Golf Las Américas.

“Considering the number of golf courses and resorts in both mainland Spain, and its islands, we believe that the nomination is a huge achievement and we’re delighted to be part of such a prestigious list of venues.”

Victor Sa?ez, golf director of The Ritz-Carlton, Abama, said: “It’s fabulous that two resorts in Tenerife have been recognised within the Spanish awards section. The island deserves recognition as an established European golf destination, and we’re obviously pleased that Abama continues to garner recognition as a top-quality golf experience.”

Barely a four-hour flight from the UK, Tenerife is a popular destination for golfers seeking guaranteed sunshine on the fairways.

Blessed with average summer temperatures of 23?, more than 70km of beaches and a wide range of cultural highlights and activities both on and off the water, the island – the largest in the Canaries – offers the ideal location for a golf break.
In addition to Golf Las Américas and The Ritz-Carlton, Abama,Tenerife features seven other different and varied layouts: Buenavista in the west; Real Club de Golf de Tenerife in the north; and Golf Costa Adeje, Golf del Sur, Amarilla, and Los Palos in the south. Tecina Golf is a 40-minute ferry ride from the mainland on the beautiful island of La Gomera.

And Tenerife is set to be at the forefront of the golf industry later this year when the sunshine destination hosts the prestigious International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) for the first time in its history from October 5-8.

Voting for the 2015 World Golf Awards is open until late autumn, with the winners set to be crowned at a lavish gala ceremony at the Conrad Algarve, Quinta do Lago, on Saturday, November 7.
