Feature Review GolfBuddy LR4

By: | Tue 24 Mar 2015

Feature review by Golfshake member Matt Holbrook (17 handicap).

If you are looking for the perfect distance measuring device in 2015 then look no further than the GolfBuddy LR4 which is the upgrade on last year's GolfBuddy LR3 model.

Weighing in at a mere 218g the unit has been designed with comfort and usability in mind. The outer casing of the LR4 has been molded to fit the palm of the hand thus making the ‘power’ button on top of the unit nice and easy to find.  The LR4 is also a redesign on the LR3 providing improved ergonomics for improved usability and a refreshed design.

Usability:

This is a solid product from GolfBuddy building on the successes of their GPS products and the launch of their first laser range finder product last year.   First impressions were really good and the LR4 is small, compact and lightweight compared to some other range finders on the market and is super easy to use.

On course I found the ‘Pin’ mode to be really useful. If like me you haven’t got the steadiest of hands this mode will enable you to pick up the pin really easily – especially in strong winds if you’re having trouble with the flag being blown about.

Switching to the scan mode I was able to pick out particular lay-up points on fairways, ditches and also, on one particular hole at my course, the OOB stakes that lurk just at the back of the green. Using the LR4 to be able to find my absolute limit here was very handy.

The quickness and ease to use by far outweighs a GPS unit in my opinion and I look forward to continued use and help from the LR4 as my quest for a lower handicap picks up pace through the summer.

Features:

Three different modes are available. ‘Normal’ mode will pick up distances where the ‘target’ is locked in. The ‘Scan’ mode will give you a running distance as you move the device around (particularly useful when using on fairway bunkers to get distance of front and back) and ‘Pin’ mode will automatically pick up the pin.

Offering 6x magnification the LR4 also offers accurate distances from 200 yards plus and will actually give you yardages/meters up to 880 yards. Additional features include:

  • Accuracy: +/- 1m
  • IPX4 water and dust resistant
  • 10-seconds laser beam
  • Automatic shut-off after 10 seconds
  • Default to “Last Used” settings
  • Up to 5,000 scans battery life
  • Suitable for glasses wearers

This is another really great offering from GolfBuddy that’s comes highly recommended and is available in stores in with a RRP of £219.95.  I'd rate this product 9/10.
