Puerto Rico Open Preview, Picks & Analysis

By: Golf Shake | Mon 02 Mar 2015

Post by Sports Writer Derek Clements

WITH all the big boys in America for the WGC Cadillac, the so-called journeymen get a chance to secure their cards in two lesser events - the Africa Open on the European Tour, and the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour.

All eyes will be on Doral, and quite rightly, but it is worth taking a quick look at the men most likely to take advantage of their golden chance in the supporting events.

Chesson Hadley won in Puerto Rico 12 months ago and is back to defend his title at Trump International, a monster measuring more than 7,500 yards. The field includes a number of major champions - John Daly, David Duval, Trevor Immelman, David Toms and Lee Janzen, who has just won his first event on the Champions Tour at the ACE Group Classic.

Despite the length of the course, you can expect to see some spectacular scoring - Hadley won last year with a 72-hole total of 267. There would be no more popular winner than Jarrod Lyle, making the fifth start of his comeback season since beating back cancer for a second time. Former US Amateur champion Peter Uihlein, an American playing on the European Tour, crosses the Atlantic on a sponsor exemption and will be determined to show what he can do.

Brendon de Jonge, the world no 87,  is the highest ranked entrant and he will surely go close, but not as close as Ryo Ishikawa.

Puerto Rico Open Betting Picks

To win: Ryo Ishikawa 14/1

Each-way: Bredon de Jonge 15/1

Each-way Chesson Hadley 25/1
