We are this week assessing the golf betting opportunities in the field for the Players Championship, taking place at TPC Sawgrass, Florida.
The Players Championship is widely considered as the unofficial fifth major and draws a world class field. TPC Sawgrass is a 7,215 yard par 72 and ranked as the 19th most difficult course out of 49 on the PGA Tour in 2012.
The course is beautifully sculptured and requires a consistent performer who plays well on all lengths of hole with a low scoring average. The water threats are obvious but it’s the bunkers that offer up the real threat so a winning golfer here must be comfortable in the sand.
Players to watch...
Tiger Woods (8/1) was a winner here back in 2001 and has shown a return to his previous high levels this year with 3 wins (Farmers, Cadillac, Arnold Palmer) from 6 events. Tiger ranks 1st in terms of scoring average and 20th for sand saves and we believe he will go well this week.
Justin Rose (28/1) has recorded 3 top 10’s from 6 events this year, with a best finish of 2nd in the Arnold Palmer. Rose doesn’t have a great record at this event but his 2013 game appears perfect for the course – ranking 2nd for scoring average and 1st for sand saves.
Graeme McDowell (40/1) has 4 top 10’s from 7 events this year, including a win at the Heritage. McDowell ranks an impressive 5th for scoring average and 17th for sand saves so we think that he has a good chance to go well this week.
Brandt Snedeker (45/1) has 5 top 10’s from 9 events, including a win at Pebble Beach. Snedeker ranks 7th for scoring average and 13th for sand saves this year and we think that combination will serve him well this week.
