We are this week assessing the golf betting opportunities in the field for the Wells Fargo Championship, taking place at Quail Hollow, North Carolina.
Quail Hollow is a lengthy 7,442 yard par 72 and ranked as the 25th most difficult course out of 49 on the PGA Tour in 2012. A player needs to be comfortable in the sand here as there are numerous tricky bunkers, both the fairway and greenside varieties. The fairway ones can be avoided with straight hitting off the tee and as the course is lengthy, total driving will be important. Par 5 scoring will also be important, with Fowler winning last year on -14 and he scored -14 on the par 5’s. Prior to that Glover won in 2011 with -12 (out of a -15 total) from the par 5’s
Players to watch...
Rickie Fowler (28/1) has recorded 3 top 10’s from 9 events this year with a best finish of T3 (Arnold Palmer). Every event that Fowler has completed this year he has shot 2 rounds in the 60’s and 2 rounds in the 70’s – more consistency will be needed this week. However, Fowler won here last year and comes into this week ranked 9th for GIR from fairway bunkers, 10th for sand saves and 16th for par 5 birdie or better. All-in-all we feel that Fowler has a great chance of retaining his title.
Brian Harman (225/1) has already competed in 14 events this year with a best finish of T14 (Tamba Bay). Harman shot 67 in the first round here last year, which shows that he is capable around this course. Despite a weak start to 2013 we feel that Harman has the game to go well here, if he can just rediscover it. In 2012 he ranked 17th for GIR from fairway bunker and 22nd for total driving. Worth an each-way punt at a big price.
Will Claxton (500/1) had a solid first season on the PGA Tour last year, finishing 89th in the FedEx standings. This year his form has plummeted, missing 9 cuts out of 12 events. Similar to Harman though, he has the game to go well here if he can rediscover his form. In 2012 he ranked 16th for GIR from fairway bunker and 23rd for total driving. Another player worth an each-way shot at a massive price...after all he was T26 here last year.
