Open Champion Joins Celebs at Sandbach Fundraiser
Stoke City legend Jimmy Greenhoff and European Tour pro and BBC commentator Andrew Coltart are among the celebrities taking part in the Pros Celebrities Disabled and Amateur (PCDA) Golf Challenge at Malkins Bank GC, Sandbach, on June 15.
Organised by Simon Mugglestone, captain of the club and a member of BALASA (British Amputee & Les Autres Sports Association), the event will also feature a number of top disabled golfers, many of whom have competed in the prestigious Disabled British Open (DBO), including last year’s winner, 21-year-old Scot Alasdair Berry.
As well as DBO competitors the day will also see the participation of a number of golfers belonging to the Golf4Heroes rehabilitation scheme, the Battle Back golf programme.
Greenhoff, who played more than 330 games for the Potters before moving to Manchester United with whom he won the FA Cup in 1977, will lead a team from Stoke City Old Boys, while Ladies European Tour professional Tara Dayer-Smith should also be there on the day to offer her support.
The proceeds from the charity day will go to the Peter Alliss Masters Golfing Society, which funds powered wheelchairs for disabled children.
Mugglestone, a competitor in the DBO himself, explained: “We’re hoping we can raise a significant amount of money for charity while having an enjoyable day of friendly, but competitive golf. For many of the former competitors in the Disabled British Open this will be our only chance to play together this year as the competition has taken a year’s break before coming back in 2014 – so it will be good to catch up with a lot of familiar faces.
“We’re getting good support from all areas: professional golfers, celebrities and amateurs – but there are still some places left for what promises to be a really great and worthwhile day.”
The day includes bacon bap upon arrival, golf, gala dinner, prizegiving, auction and after-dinner entertainment and costs £65 per person – or £240 for a team of four – with places still available.
