We are this week assessing the golf betting opportunities in the field for the RBC Heritage, taking place at Harbour Town Golf Links, South Carolina.
Harbour Town is a challenging 7,101 yard par 71 and ranked as the 9th most difficult course out of 49 on the PGA Tour in 2012. The average winning score over the past 3 years has been -13 so expect something similar this week. This week you need a consistent golfer, so one who ranks well in scoring average and knows how to make a birdie when it presents itself. At the same time, you need a player that is comfortable playing from sand as there will be many par saving challenges from both fairway and greenside bunkers.
Players to watch...
Matt Kuchar (18/1) has made the cut in all 9 of his events this year, including a win at the WGC World Matchplay. He ranks 15th for scoring average and 15th for sand saves so we think he should go well this week.
Jim Furyk (18/1) has been as consistent as ever this year, making all 8 cuts and recording 2 top 10 finishes. Furyk has an excellent recent record here with a win in 2010 and an 8th last year. Furyk ranks 27th in scoring average and his good recent form and excellent record at this course make him a contender this week.
Luke Donald (16/1) has only recorded 1 top 15 finish in his 5 events so far this year. Donald finished 2nd here in 2011 so we know that he enjoys the course. This year he ranks 28th for scoring average, 9th for sand saves and 23rd for GIR from fairway bunkers – all round well equipped for this course.
Jason Dufner (33/1) produced some solid golf last week to finish in a tie for 20th. Dufner lies 5th in the GIR from fairway bunker rankings which will be an asset here. He also ranks 37th for par 4 birdie or better, and maximising par 4’s will be essential this week.
Jeff Klauk (300/1) is something of a wild card pick after tipping 4 well fancied players at short odds! However, Klauk is an excellent bunker player - ranking 16th for sand saves. He is also a good putter (35th) and ranks 22nd in terms of eagles per hole and therefore we think he is capable of a low round. Whether he could produce 4 low rounds is another thing, but he is worth an each-way punt at a huge price.
