Melzer to Defend Faldo Series Title at Sporting Club Berlin
Posted by: Darren Ramowski on Mon 25 Jun 2012
Warayu Melzer will be looking for repeat success when he tees off in the third Faldo Series Germany Championship at the Sporting Club Berlin in the Sport & SPA Resort A-ROSA Scharmützelsee on July 23-24. The 18-year-old won last year’s title to secure a trip to Northern Ireland for the Grand Final.
“It was an amazing experience to meet young golfers from all over the world at the Faldo Series Grand Final in Ireland and then play against them,” commented Melzer. “What impressed me most was the opportunity to receive personal advice from golf legend Nick Faldo and rising star Rory McIlroy. I will never forget that.”
Talented golfers aged 12 to 21 will compete over two rounds on the Faldo Course in Bad Saarow on July 23-24. With the field divided into five age-groups – three for boys and two for girls – the age-group winners will join Sir Nick Faldo for the sixteenth Faldo Series Europe Grand Final at Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland on September 11-13.
Off the course, competitors at the third Germany Championship will learn from Keith Wood, personal coach to the six-time Major winner. Wood will also spend time with younger children from the local community as part of a grass-roots drive to help boost access to golf.
Supported by The R&A, the European Tour and Lough Erne Resort, the 2012 Faldo Series Europe schedule features a record 20 tournaments in 14 countries including six in England plus others in Bahrain, Ireland, Chile, the Czech Republic, Greece, Wales, Austria, Brazil, Germany, The Netherlands, Scotland, Slovakia and Russia.
Established in 1996, 38 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 28 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
Golfers born in 1991 or later wishing to enter the Faldo Series Germany Championship at Sporting Club Berlin on July 23-24 should email v.herbon@a-rosa.de or visit www.a-rosa-golf.de. The 36-hole tournament is open to golfers of any nationality.
