Byers on Fire at Gtour Slaley Hall
Posted by: Darren Ramowski on Thu 07 Jun 2012
Steve Byers a 6 handicapper from Richmond Park Golf Club wins the latest event on the 2012 Gtour Race to Cyprus. Steve who travelled over 300 miles from his home county of Surrey to compete in his third of the 2012 season is not averse to travelling having only recently returned from living in Australia.
"I wanted to start a new life in London with competitive golf at the core. I have always wondered about how good my golf game is and where it could take me so I jumped at the chance to join the Gtour"
Slaley Hall has been a regular stop on the Gtour since 2009 and this years players were not disappointed as the event coincided with the end of this springs poor weather and a venue that had been prepared for The Seniors Tour later this year.
Travelling up to the venue early to prepare for the competition put Byers in a good position going into the event and a poor start wasnt going to get in his way
"I felt very in control and played the first hole great. Only problem was i took at a seven at the 2nd and the hard work was undone. That's why winning felt really good because being 3 over after 2 and battling back to 1 over after 16 confirmed my determination to win, the confidence of my game on the course and justified the hard work i had done prior to the event."
Sponsored by De Vere Venues, Aphrodite Hills Cyprus, Bunker Mentality, Aegean Airlines, Aim-Mate and GolfMission, The Gtour – Race to Cyprus is the leading Amateur golf tour in the UK and unlike any other golf event is open to all golfers. With weekend events, Year long Order of Merit and no restriction on club or non club status The Gtour – Race to Cyprus provides a unique fun, social and competitive tour experience. Competing in at least 3 qualifying events around the UK the top 52 players will be invited to compete in the UK semi final in the Autumn at De Vere Belton Woods before the top 10 progress to Aphrodite Hills in January 2013.
The tour now moves South to Wildwood Golf and Country club in Surrey on Saturday the 2nd of June where Byers will play in his 4th event of the year "Its my version of being a pro golfer and a starting point for practising what it would be like to be on tour as a pro. I see the gtour as a launch pad for my aspirations to try to get on the europro pga tour next year"
