Costa Brava Offers More Than Just Winter Sun For European Tour Players And Golfers

Released By Costa Brava - Girona Tourist Board

One hundred and fifty two of golf’s leading players have descended on the Costa Brava this month to take part in the European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage, which is being held at PGA Catalunya Resort.

This will be the forth consecutive year that the region’s ‘crown jewel’ has hosted the six-round event, which will see the top 30 and ties earn their playing privileges for the 2012 European Tour International Schedule.

Golfers visiting Costa Brava this winter can either follow in the footsteps of the Qualifying School hopefuls at the challenging World Top 100-ranked PGA Catalunya Resort, or enjoy a more leisurely round at Club de Golf Costa Brava, one of the region’s oldest golf courses, Empordà Golf, a Continental European Top 100 Course that offers 36 holes set in beautiful parkland, or Torremirona Golf Club that enjoys wonderful views over the Pyrenees, among others.

During the winter months, golfers can combine their unforgettable golfing experiences with the slightly more athletic pursuits of skiing, hiking and white-water rafting in the popular Pyrenees mountain range.

Costa Brava is home to one of Spain’s oldest ski resorts, La Molina, which has welcomed skiers since 1908. The resort, which hosted this year’s Snowboarding World Championships (January 2011), has teamed up with world-famous Masella to create Alp 2500, a huge skiing domain with a joint ski pass covering over 118 km of slopes, 29 ski lifts and over 680 snow cannons, consolidating the area’s reputation as a world-class ski destination.

“Although the Costa Brava is considered an attractive winter sun destination, many do not realise the breadth of winter activities Catalonia has to offer,” said Ramón Ramos, Director at Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona. “Costa Brava is home to one of the Pyrenees’ pioneer ski resorts – La Molina – where alpine and cross-country, as well as snowboarders have congregated for over 100 years.

“The close proximity of the Costa Brava’s attractions – be they cultural, historical, or sporting – means that you can go skiing in the morning and in less than an hour an a half you can be on the beach! So the choice is definitely yours when you come to Costa Brava this winter,” he concluded.

Golf courses to play while visiting Costa Brava include:

  • PGA Golf Catalunya Resort – ranked a World Top 100 Course and a Spanish Open venue
  • Golf Girona – with its wonderfully maintained layout
  • Club de Golf Costa Brava – one of the region’s oldest golf courses
  • Torremirona Golf Club – enjoys wonderful views over the Pyrenees
  • Empordà Golf – another World Top 100 Course that offers 36 holes set in beautiful parkland
  • Club de Golf Peralada – whose course presents a good test for players of all standards
  • Golf Serres de Pals – located in the heart of the Empordà area
  • Golf Platja de Pals – a British design on the seafront
  • Gualta par-3 – for those looking for a quick round
