In the Bag - Ernie Els
Posted by: Darren Ramowski on Tue 06 Apr 2010
With back-to-back victories on the PGA Tour, Callaway Staff Professional Ernie Els is now in the driving seat going into the first Major Championship of the season, The Masters Tournament at Augusta, April 8-11.
Els was at ease tee-to-green during the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in late March, but the victory in Florida, following hot on the heels of his triumph at the WGC CA Championship at Doral, was the culmination of months of work on both his game and equipment.
Since last summer, Els has been transforming his selection of clubs, liaising with Callaway’s designers and engineers to fine-tune performance and putting into play equipment specific to his game and the individual courses he competes on.
In the Bag
DRIVERS: Callaway FT-Tour (8.5˚) with Project X shaft OR Callaway FT-iZ Tour (8.5) with Project X Shaft
FAIRWAYS: Callaway X Tour (3 & 5) with Project X 7.0 graphite shafts half-an-inch longer than standard;
3-wood has 13.7˚ loft, 5-wood has 18.5˚
IRONS: Callaway Tour Authentic Proto X (3-PW) with KBS Tour shafts, half-inch longer than standard, lie angle 1˚ upright; lofts 1˚ stronger than standard; swing weight, D3
WEDGES: Callaway X Forged (54˚, 59˚) with KBS Tour shafts, both half-inch longer than standard; lie angle 1˚ upright; swing weight, D4.
PUTTER: Odyssey White Ice #5, 35in
BALL: Callaway Tour i (s)
Ranked 7th in the world, top of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup standings and with a leading scoring average of 68.88, the results of Els’ technical and equipment changes are clear to see.
All that now remains is an assault on the four Major Championships, starting with Augusta where the short game and putting are critical, and where Els believes his not-so-secret weapon - the Tour i(s) – will be perfectly suited.
