Pretty in Pink Poulter plays out in Style
In an all English final Ian Poulter beat Paul Casey 4 and 2 in the 36 hole Accenture World Golf Championship Match Play event on Sunday.
Poulter's win secured him his first elite event win, $1.4million and a world golf ranking of 5th. He only trialed once at the start of the round and Casey never really got close at Poulter took the lead on the 7th hole and domaineted from that point on.
Poulter said, "I would say my short game this week's been as good as it has ever been and I putted very, very well."
"I'm just so happy to finally win on American soil," added Poulter
Despite Casey picking up his game in the afternoon round his performance could have been down to fatigue. Having not played the final 4 holes in each of his rounds up to the Semi final, it took him six extra holes to beat Camilo Villegas in a match that extended to 7:10am on the Sunday before the final.
Casey was the runner-up again for the 2nd consecutive year and admitted to mental tiredness, 'I'm not going to make excuses,' he said. 'There were a lot of shots I wanted to pull off and I didn't.'
In true style Poulter twittered after the match to his near 1 million followers 'World number 5 how does that sound, wicked. What a great day, Paul Casey is a great guy, good to see him playing well after rib injury.'
The 18-hole consolation final saw Villegas beat Sergio Garcia 5 and 4 to finish third in the event.
The 4th, 5th and 6th spots of the World Golf Rankings are now made up of the 3 English men Westwood, Poulter and Casey.
