Magnificent Miguel edges out Westwood in Dubai Desert Classic

Leading golf equipment manufacturer, PING enjoyed a triumphant weekend at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, with fellow PING pro’s, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Lee Westwood battling it out in a dramatic playoff at the final event of the European Tour’s Desert Swing.

After a nail biting final day at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Miguel Angel Jiménez courageously edged out European Number One Lee Westwood at the third play-off hole to claim his 16th European Tour victory and move to 4th in The Race to Dubai rankings.

Overjoyed by his victory, the charismatic Spaniard, a two-time runner-up in Dubai, said: "All week I've been playing strong with a strong mind and with good support from my caddie. I have been coming to Dubai for many years and had a few chances to win and now I have it, I feel very pleased and very happy."

Jiménez has now claimed nine of his 16 European Tour titles in his 40s, and is the oldest player to win on the European Tour since 2004.

Westwood shrugged off his winless start to the 2010 season at the Emirates Golf Club.  "The results, although I would liked to have won last week, don't really concern me too much," he said.

Despite the disappointment at finishing runner-up, Westwood still had plenty to smile about as he moved to 5th in The Race top Dubai standings and cemented his place at 4th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Westwood's close effort in Dubai comes after missing the cut in his seasonal debut in Abu Dhabi after problems with a new set of irons and finishing third in Qatar after a new driver thwarted his final round challenge.
