Stunning display secures Westwood top spot

Lee Westwood produced an empathetic final round of 64 to secure a six shot victory at the Dubai World Championship and also the 2009 Race To Dubai title, which saw him become Europe's number one for the second time in his career.

"This is definitely the biggest moment of my career today," he said.

Westwood shot a course-record eight-under-par 64 in the final round at the Earth Course in the United Arab Emirates to finish at 23-under 265.

The final days golf was a sublime performance from Westwood with him hitting every fairway, hitting every green in regulation and putting on a real show of golfing skill.

"That’s about as good as I’ve ever played, I’m speechless really,” he said.

Ross McGowan of England was second after a 68, and McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, shot a 67 to finish third at 273.

The romanticists my have been cheering for McIlroy but at 20 years of age it's was still an impressive performance and great season earning over £3 million and with this performance moving him to 10th in the world golf rankings.

"I have no complaints. I gave it my best shot and it's been a great season," said McIlroy.

Europe now have 6 players in the top 10 for the first time in history, surely a good sign for 2010 ?
