PRESS RELEASE -
RETURN TO HIGH PROFILE TOURNAMENT GOLF A SUCCESS FOR SLALEY HALL
Players, sponsors and golf fans alike rich in praise for the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship
The first ever De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship to be hosted at the luxurious Slaley Hall has been hailed as a magnificent success by Senior Tour players, sponsors and spectators. The climax of an action packed week saw Gordon J Brand defeat his namesake Gordon Brand Jnr at the sixth hole of a sudden death play-off. It was a fitting finale to the tournament for the bumper crowd, which surpassed 15,000 over the four days of the competition, while Sky Sports extended their live coverage of the event on the Sunday evening by over 90 minutes so that armchair viewers didn’t miss out on the dramatic conclusion.
A strong field including former Masters Champion and 2006 Ryder Cup winning captain Ian Woosnam, 2002 Ryder Cup winning captain Sam Torrance and Ryder Cup star Costantino Rocca, along with defending champion Carl Mason took to the fairways of the Dave Thomas designed Hunting Course all competing for the record prize fund of £300,000. It proved a good week for two players who celebrated their birthdays during the event; runner-up Brand Jnr, making his debut on the European Seniors Tour, turned 50 prior to the start of the tournament (19th August) while Torrance marked his 55th birthday on the final day of the competition (24th August) by carding a brilliant 67, the lowest score of the week.
A number of the leading players elected to stay at the resort and experience the spectacular facilities available at the recently refurbished Slaley Hall. In addition to stylish and elegant bedrooms, the Slaley Estate also offers spectacular suites and secluded wood and stone lodges. Furthermore, players and their partners could enjoy the extensive spa and fitness facilities on offer, as well as the aptly named Claret Jug clubhouse restaurant with a must-try menu of modern food made from the freshest local produce or fine dining in the Dukes grill. Players were treated to a gourmet barbecue on the Saturday evening, courtesy of De Vere.
Despite finishing runner-up, Brand Jnr thoroughly enjoyed his debut on the European Seniors Tour; he said: “This has been a terrific week and it’s a great way to start my career on the Seniors Tour. Slaley Hall has been a fantastic venue, and it’s a great place to play and stay. The course was a tough challenge and it’s always good to be able to stay on site in a luxurious hotel at events like this.”
Although the week began with heavy rain and thunder storms, Golf Courses and Estate Manager at Slaley Hall Steve Cram and his team did a tremendous job to ensure the Hunting Course was in peak condition for the start of the Pro Am (20th August); with the two Brands finishing regulation play at four over par, 292 highlighting how tough the course played over the four days.
Slaley Hall pulled out all the stops to ensure that this was a tournament with a difference. The famous four of Torrance, Brand Jnr, Mason and Rocca took to the roof of the Edwardian hotel for a nearest the pin contest in the spectacular Rooftop Charity Challenge at the start of the week. The ‘interactive golf zone’ Slaley Hall offered to all spectators proved extremely popular. Over 500 free 15 minute golf lessons from De Vere qualified PGA Professionals were taken, with more than 300 golfers having mini custom-fit sessions using flightscope launch monitors, while around 40 juniors took part in a group tuition session on Thursday afternoon where they received expert advice from some of the stars of the Seniors Tour.![]()
Director of Golf and Leisure of De Vere, Daniel Hodson said: “It was always our intention to make sure we offered a great all round experience for everyone who took part and visited Slaley Hall during the event. Given the incredibly positive feedback we have had from the players, hospitality guests and spectators in the galleries, it would suggest we fulfilled this objective. It was great to see tournament golf return to the North East and in particular to Slaley Hall; we look forward to welcoming the event again next year.”
