Girls Golf Rocks Launches Campaign in Staffordshire

By: Golfshake Editor | Tue 14 Mar 2017

With the launch of a campaign designed to inspire new players to have fun and play a new sport, Girls Golf Rocks is set to make a difference in Staffordshire, with female golfers from the county squad to act as Ambassadors, sharing their enjoyment and encouraging other girls, aged five to 18.

The project tees off with free taster sessions in March and April, followed by coaching courses with PGA professionals, together with all-important support from the ambassadors.

Staffordshire is one of seven new counties to join the national campaign, run jointly by England Golf and the Golf Foundation. It aims to increase the number of girl golfers from the average of just two full members per club and it’s having a great impact.

When Girls Golf Rocks ran in nine counties last year over 600 girls had a go, more than 500 went on to take coaching courses and over 230 have already taken out some type of membership.

Girls Golf Rocks will launch in Staffordshire with taster sessions at:

  • Calderfield Golf Range (Ultimate Golf) on Saturday 18 March, 11am-1pm
  • Branston Golf & Country Club on Monday 20 March, 5.30-7.30pm
  • Keele Driving Range on Saturday 22 April, 2-4pm
  • 3 Hammers Golf Complex on Sunday 23 April, 11am-1pm

Following the tasters, the centres will each offer a five-week coaching course with PGA professionals, when the ambassadors will be on hand to encourage the newcomers. All the girls completing the coaching courses will be given a US Kids Golf 7-iron to help them get started.

Then, the new players will be invited to a fun day with the ambassadors featuring multi-skills challenges and the chance to play on a golf course.

Julie Brown, the Staffordshire county junior organiser, said: “We are excited about being involved in Girls Golf Rocks because we've always had good girl golfers in our county and it's our aim to get more girls playing. It's great for their health, well-being and self-confidence.

“We are lucky in Staffordshire to have so many good courses and we would like to see the women's sections in each club grow with younger women enjoying this great sport.”

The ambassadors include 15-year-old Morgan Thomas from Beau Desert Golf Club who said: “The reason I like playing golf and would encourage any other girl to get involved is because it's great fun and anyone can play at any age in their life.

“I started when I was four years of age, and it doesn't matter how you look, all body types can play. I have seen so many young girls who lacked confidence when they first started playing and within a short period of time they are full of self-belief.

“It's also a great game, as I have found, in improving your social skills to make new friends that will last a lifetime. So come along and give it a go, it's a game that you and the whole family can enjoy together.”

Girls Golf Rocks started in 2015 with a trial in Essex. Ambassadors and new players from the county are now featured in a Girls Golf Rocks video, which captures all that’s special about the programme. Bella Jay, 14, sums it up when she says: “Golf has done so much for me, I love it. You should come and join us and see how much fun it is.” Click here to view the video.
