Story of Seve's Miraculous Bunker Shot at PGA National

By: Golfshake Editor | Wed 22 Feb 2017

In a remarkable and historic career, Seve Ballesteros produced a library of astonshingly created and imagined shots that helped to define a generation of golfers watching on. He thrilled, inspired, and amazed those fortunate enough to see him play, with many of his greatest moments falling into the realm of legend.

Perhaps none more so than his bunker shot on the 18th of the 1983 Ryder Cup at PGA National. Facing two-time major champion Fuzzy Zoeller in the singles, the charismatic Spaniard's tee shot found the sand on the par five. Close to the lip, 245 yards from the hole, and without an obvious route to the green, the talisman pulled a three-wood from his bag, and played the most extraordinary of shots, over the edge and drawing onto the green. He would make birdie to earn a crucial half-point for Europe, who ultimately came up narrowly short of winning the match despite producing a showing that laid foundations of future success.

Most famously, there is no footage of the shot, as the first game out wasn't covered by the televised coverage. We only have eyewitness accounts of its greatness. Bernhard Langer described it as the "most miraculous shot that I have ever seen." 18-time major champion and U.S. Captain, Jack Nicklaus said it was the "greatest shot I ever saw."

Gene Sarazen produced the shot heard around the world at the Masters in 1935, but there is no recording of Seve's magic. Only memories, such as that of his American caddie, Nick De Paul, who reflected on it in this video.
