Blog: Preparing for a Tour Caddie Experience

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 21 Nov 2016

Blog post by Golfshake Ambassador Andrew Picknan

I am looking forward to a unique golfing opportunity this week. On Wednesday, I will be playing round of golf with the vastly experienced European Tour caddie Steve Brotherhood on my bag.

He has 12 years experience caddying at the very top level for excellent golfers like Steve Webster, Paul Broadhurst and  Anthony Wall. His current player is David Howell, the five-time winner on the European Tour and regular Sky Sports pundit, who is easily one of my favourite personalities in the game Sky Sports pundit.

Steve Brotherhood and David Howell

Steve was one the bag during David's outstanding successes at events such as the Alfreed Dunhill Links Championship. I can only begin to imagine what it must feel like as you walk down the 18th in the lead at a major competition as part of the winning team, particularly at a venue like St. Andrews.

He is venturing out with a business that offers any golfer the opportunity to experience the benefit of world class caddie support whilst playing a round of golf. For me, I'm already viewing this as an early Christmas present!

Having always had a difficulty with course management and making the right strategic decisions while playing, so I'm hopeful that his input will help.

When arranging a mutually convenient time and location, I have also been sent a request for information about my game in general. These include what I perceive as my golfing strengths and weaknesses. It goes without saying that one list is much bigger than the other!

He also needs to know what I think the carry distance is for each club and some more biographical information. At the end of the experience he produces a written report with his thoughts and ideas for improvement.

Tour Caddy Experience

Think like a Pro - If you can relate to any of these, then you new a caddie experience!

Steve is not only a top caddie but a fine golfer in his own right. He was the Nottinghamshire Open Champion of 2015 as an amateur and has also played in the professional ranks on the Euro Pro Tour earlier in his career. He has held many major amateur titles across the Midlands, including the club championship at Newark 2016.

This man knows his golf. I am very excited to have him guide me around an excellent, but difficult, Newark.

Strategy is not a word that is in my usual vocabulary as I am a member of the hit it, find it, (some times) and hit it again school of golf.

Steve has agreed to answer some of our reader’s questions as part of the interview process.

Let us have any questions you want Steve to answer about his golf adventures and experiences and I will put them to him on your behalf. Comment below or leave a message on the Golfshake Forums, Twitter @golfshake or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/golfshake/?fref=ts.
