Hainault Forest's Colin Johnson Tops Mid Amateur Tour Scratch Order of Merit

By: Golfshake Editor | Wed 26 Oct 2016

Hainault Forest's Colin Johnson has topped the Mid Amateur Golf Tour Scratch Order of Merit for 2016, courtesy of success in a number of 36 and 54 hole tournaments across the UK.

His late win at Thorndon Park in September made it possible to win the OOM with a good result at the season finale at Western Gailes. A solid performance in Scotland meant that Colin gained enough points to just edge out Gareth Sheridan (Camberley Heath) and long-time OOM leader Martin Young (Brokenhurst Manor GC) to secure the title.

“I still can’t quite believe I ended up winning the OOM. It was never on my radar and with a few events to go finishing in 2nd or 3rd behind Martin was the goal for the season. Things just fell into place with my win at Thorndon Park and with Martin having to withdraw from the Scottish it opened up the possibility of winning. I am proud to have won on such a great tour for quality golf, quality courses and great players.” Added Colin.

Final placings:

Scratch OOM – 1st Colin Johnson (Hainault Forest), 2nd Gareth Sheridan (Camberley Heath), 3rd Martin Young (Brokenhurst), 4th David Westwood (Handsworth) and 5th Andy Oates (Worksop).

The 2016 Mid Amateur Golf Tour season included 25+ events at many of the top 100 golf courses in the UK. Players came from all over the UK and Europe to compete in the UK’s most Competitive Amateur Golf Tour. Many of the events are also recognised as counting events on the World Amateur Golf Ranking calendar (WAGR).

“The tour is a great opportunity for players to compete at the best UK venues against the best Mid Amateurs in the country and I would encourage anybody to get involved. 2017 sees us visit many more top 100 golf courses including Rye, Woodhall Spa, Formby, Hillside, Sunningdale, Sherwood Forest and Trevose with 5 WAGR events open to players from all countries.” Added Katie Morris, Operations Director for the tour.
