Callaway Launches Big Bertha Fusion Driver and Fairway Woods

By: Golfshake Editor | Tue 30 Aug 2016

Callaway has confirmed the upcoming release of the Big Bertha Fusion Driver and Fairway Woods, with innovative design techniques and materials used to establish even higher standards in terms of forgiveness and distance.

The Big Bertha Fusion Driver marries an all-new aerospace-grade titanium exoskeleton (Exo-Cage) with an ultra-lightweight triaxial carbon crown and sole plates to deliver Callaway’s most forgiving driver ever.

The fusion of the Exo-Cage with triaxial carbon allows a remarkable 35.4 grams of weight to be saved and re-positioned to maximise forgiveness. Combine this with the appealing new head shape, Speed Step technology (created alongside aerospace experts) and R·MOTO Face technology and you get a fast, aerodynamic driver that has 17% higher MOI versus the XR 16 (the driver with more wins on the 2016 European Tour than any other and three Majors to its name).

Callaway has been using carbon materials in its woods since the Big Bertha C4 Driver back in 2002, but the development of triaxial carbon takes weight saving to a whole new level. Nearly 50% of the body of the new driver is triaxial carbon, but this accounts for only 11% of the overall club weight as triaxial carbon is so light (65% lighter than titanium).

Dr. Alan HocknellSenior Vice President of Research and DevelopmentCallaway Golf, said:“Triaxial carbon technology, fused with our industry-leading manufacturing techniques and exhaustive research and design work, has created a truly outstanding driver, with incredible forgiveness and performance attributes which all golfers will enjoy.

“By using multi-materials and saving weight in the head to subsequently reposition it to aid performance, it is incredible to think we have created a driver that has a 17% higher MOI than the XR 16, in itself a great product.”

Available in 9°, 10.5° and 13.5° HT loft options, the club is also supplied in two shaft lengths, a 44.5in shaft combines with a head that features a 12g back weight for enhanced control and tighter dispersion, whereas a longer 45.5in shaft is coupled to a head with a 5g back weight for greater distance potential.

Premium stock shaft offerings are the 45g/55g Recoil ES 440/450 or the 65g Diamana Red Board, with a Golf Pride New Decade Platinum grip as standard.

Designed alongside the Fusion Driver, the new high MOI Fusion Fairways, available in 3 (15°), 5 (18°) and 7 Wood (21°) options, also benefit from the ultra-light triaxial carbon crown.

This crown is 78% lighter than a typical steel crown and again allows strategic positioning of weight in the head to optimise the centre of gravity and increase MOI, resulting in higher launch and more forgiveness.  The fairways also feature Next Gen Hyper Speed Face Cup technology, improving ball speeds across the face to maximise distance on centre and off-centre hits.

Both the Fusion Driver and Fairway Woods will be in store from September 30, 2016.
