Boyns Battles Back for Jamega Tour Win at Lingfield Park

By: Golfshake Editor | Tue 26 Jul 2016

With three birdies in the final four holes Ryan Boyns of Coxheath delivered an impressive performance to claim his second professional tour win at the Jamega Pro Tour event at Lingfield Park, Surrey.

The 26-year-old credited his improved form to a coaching session with Chris Weston of Sittingbourne and Milton Regis Golf Club following a dip in form and the win keeps his season alive.

“I wasn’t playing well enough to merit entering events,” he said, after beating playing partner Steve Surry of Cumberwell Park by a stroke. “Nothing was really going right, but I had a lesson from Chris and started hitting a few good shots.

“It was an easy fix that I couldn’t see. I’d been in Scotland for three weeks and Chris had advised me to shallow out my swing, but I’d exaggerated it and it was making it worse.”

George Mullins, a two-time Jamega winner in 2016, was the overnight leader and started a shot ahead of Boyns and Surry in the final group.

But a triple bogey seven on the fourth hole allowed Boyns to seize the initiative on the front nine, before the contest swung the way of Surry after five birdies in seven holes up to and including the 15th.

It was on the 15th, though, that Boyns made his move. “I holed a monster putt of about 50ft from the front of the green to prevent me going two behind,” said Boyns, whose brother Sam caddied. “I then holed a 15ft on 16 for birdie.”

All-square on three under playing the last, Surry found a fairway bunker and when he missed a 12ft putt for birdie, Boyns rolled in from four feet. “I knew it was between us,” he added. “Scoring wasn’t easy and no-one was going to come through with six or seven under par score.”

Boyns turned professional four years ago and picked up his first win on the Algarve Pro Golf Tour in Pinheiros Altos in December.

“I’ve loads of confidence now,” he said. “I feel I can challenge rather than being there to make up the numbers. The Jamega Tour has a lot of good players. I played with Simon Griffiths on the first day and he played in the US Open a couple of years ago, but I feel as if I merit my place among them now.”
