What can I say about this course, LOADS BUT IT AIN'T GOOD.......

Seriously though I had a nightmare here not because the course was challenging in it's hole layout more because it was so hilly and there are far too many parallel fairways, up and down, up and down, along and back, along and back !!!!!!!!!!!

I would play this again but only with a buggy, the trouble you get from the course walking seriously knackers you, on some holes I needed a breather before taking my second shot.

John (Turnbull) who was with Mark Sobey and myself also found it hard going in more ways than one, which is why I could'nt resist the picture above.

John taking his second shot from the Ladies Tee.

sorry mate

Birdie Boyd!

Went with the boys from work on their society outing to Fortwilliam last Friday. Started steadily with two bogey 5s before losing my ball at the 3rd and ending up with a 7. Put my tee shot in the trees at the short par 4, 4th but played a 'down the shaft' 3 wood to the edge of the green and 2 putts for a par. Got a 6 on the par 5, 5th and then stuck a hybrid wood onto the par 3, 6th, but my birdie putt just shaved the hole, leaving a tap in 3. Hit a good drive up the 7th and hit an 8 iron to the back of the green, before holing a 20 footer for a birdie 3. Thought I had hit my tee shot on the next out of bounds (Fortwilliam is one of those annoying courses with internal out of bounds), but found it lying close to the 'out of bounds', but didn't capitalise on my good fortune, as I ran up a double bogey 6. played the next 2 holes in the same vein, double bogeys. Bogeyed the par 4, 11th, parred the short 12, where my birdie putt just stayed out, but how I don't know. Found the trees on my left, with my tee shot on the 13th and was happy in the end to settle for yet another double bogey. Hit a good drive down the par 5, 14th, before guiding a 3 wood to near the large fairway bunker and then watched in amazement as my wedge shot 'grazed' the hole, almost another eagle, but I at least holed out for a birdie 4. Hit a biggish drive on 15, leaving my ball about 2 feet from the burn that runs across the fairway, hit a good wedge on the green, but alas I 3 putted it. I then parred the stroke index4, par 4, 16th, bodeyed the par 3, 17th and finished with a good par on 18, where my wedge shot sat down beside the hole. All in all I was happy to be only 2 over my handicap, but as usual the double bogeys really hurt me, but the 2 bidrdies were a bonus, sets me up nicely for my trip to Tenerife tomorrow, (Tuesday), Buenos Nouchas Amigos!

Deadly Doubles!

That old familar 'double bogey' came back to haunt me last Thursday on a dry if somewhat windy day at Whitehead. Hit a good drive off the first tee and then 'shanked' a hybrid wood, played a poor chip shot, still not on the green and then took another 3 shots to get off with a double bogey 6. Bounced back right away with a par on the short 2nd, before holing a 20 footer on the 3rd to save par. Hit a good drive into the wind at the 4th and a 7 iron to 15 feet and a safe 2 putt for my third par in a row. Found the right hand bunker at the short 5th and took a further 3 shots to get down for a bogey 4. Hit a monster of a drive (wind assisted) on the par 5, 6th, followed by a duffed 3 wood, which scuttled along the ground and ended up being what we generally call 'a bad good 'un', leaving me a 40 yard shot to the green. For some reason I over-hit my wedge shot right through the green and was somewhat lucky to walk off with a bogey 6. Found the trees on the right from the 7th tee, played a good recovery shot to the crest of the hill leaving me about 140 yards to the front of the green. The pin was on the top tier, which makes the hole abot 20 yards longer so I decided to hit a 5 wood as it was into the prevailing wind, but I duffed it and had to settle for a chip and 2 putts, for a double bogey 6. Hacked my way down the 8th, taking another double bogey, before hitting a purple patch, parring, 9,10,11 & 12, before missing from 3 feet on 13 for a par, parred 14, bogeyed 15 & 16, before struggling to another double bogey 6 on 17. Got my usual bogey 4 on 18, but left the course knowing I should've done a whole lot better!

Wasted Eagle!
By Scott Boyd on 28-Apr-2008

Had my first ever eagle while playing in the club comp last Saturday, but it was wasted as I was scoring pretty badly. Got off to a great start too, holed a 15 footer on the first for a par and then missed a birdie opportunity on the 2nd, but salvaged another par. I made a terrible mess of the par 5 3rd hole, carelessly missing a tap in for a 7, 3 putted the next 2 holes, before leaving a bunker shot stone dead on the 6th for a par 5. Had a good bogey 5 on the 7th and then made a complete 'horlicks' of the 8th, taking a 7, before finally getting down with a 4 on the 9th. Hit my tee shot down the left rough on the par 5, 10 and played a 5 wood to about the 150 yard marker (distance to the front of the green). I took out my 26% hybrid wood and as soon as I hit it I thought it was going to the right and I lamented this fact, with an exclamation of 'ah shucks' or words to that effect. My playing companions said its a perfectly good shot and  it did straighten, hit the flag and dropped into the hole for an eagle 3. Although I felt euphoric, I still couldn't find my scoring touch and went bogey, bogey, double bogey, for the next 3 holes. I made a slight recovery with a good par on the 14th, followed by a bogey on 15, before running up a big 6, on 16 and finishing with 2 bogeys. 32 points in the club comp put me about in 110th place, but I will be able to boast about that eagle for many a long day, I can tell you!

Celtic Manor

I played the 2010 course at Celtic Manor on saturday, and I have to say it has some cracking holes, and there are a few that will cause some interesting shot choices when the ryder cup is played there! I had one of those rounds, where I was striking the ball pretty well, but just couldnt putt - this coulped with the windy conditions, meant that my scoring wasnt great, but it was an enjoyable day anyway!! I now cant wait for the Ryder cup, just so I can say - "I got a par on that hole", although I can only say that of about two holes!!!

3rd time lucky!!??

After announcing my bumper couple of weeks in the sporting world, it has all turned a little bit sour!

1. I didnt win on the Grand National, and even my 5 month old nephew managed to pick out a winning bet, using the tried and tested "shut your eyes and pick a horse" trick.

2. Arsenal went crashing out of Europe last night, due largely to a penalty decision in each leg, going against us. Not that im bitter about it, but im going to support Barca for the rest of the competition!!

3. The final leg is the North v South, im due a bit of luck, and as they say "third time lucky!" Should be a good weekend of golf, starting with a round on the sunday, before the big event on the monday.

Come on the South!!!

Prize Winner!

Played in the first stroke competition of the season on Saturday April 5, it had been cancelled the previous Saturday, which I wasn't sorry about as I had finished with a gross 93 on that occasion. On Saturday past the wind was pretty excessive even for our course, but I coped fairly well I think, with 7 parrs, 7 bogeys and 4 double bogeys. My score of 84 gross, nett 71 was 2 shots over my handicap but in the end it was a pretty good score as 'Standard Scaratch' on the day was 71 and I finished in 9th place overall in a field of 176 players, winning the A.D. (over 60) prize in the process. This is the third time I've picked up the A.D. prize since reaching the big 6-0 in June 2005 and I'm quite pleased about it. My 3 parrs in a row on the back nine, 14, 15 & 16 were what gave me the edge and I came within a whisker of birdieing all three, but was happy with the pars. My other 4 parrs were on the 2nd where I left a 40 foot putt stone dead, the 8th where I holed a 10 footer, the 9th where my putt from the edge of the green tooka big break when it looked in the hole. and the 11th where my birdie putt just wandered away. This was our first competition where it was 'play as it lies' and the ball at times was fairly dirty and no doubt contributed to some missed putts. But as the old saying goes, 'it's all swings and roundabouts' and you just have to keep plugging away. This Saturday it's fousomes, but hopefully I'll get a game tomorrow Wednesday, weather permitting, roll on the summer is all I can say!

The first SelBri Cup is nearly upon us and it is certain to be a great day`s golf. I look forward to seeing you all there and I`m sure the banter will be good as it seemed to be warming up nicely at Chartham the other day. Bring it on Brighton, I can`t wait!

It could be a good couple of weeks!

There is a bumper packed couple of weeks coming up in the world of sport, and by the end of it, im either going to be on top of the world, or in the depths of dispair!!

It all starts tonight with the Arsenal V Liverpool champions league QF, which concludes next week, being an Arsenal fan, I am used to seeing great football but no trophies, so this is something that needs to be rectified!

Ill have my annual bet on the grand national on saturday

...Then its the big one - North v South!! This is a must win, im not sure I could face coming into work for the next year, having to read the posts of gloating Northerners!!! Come on the south!!!! Come on the trophies!!!

Snow at Easter!?
By Luke Tricker on 26-Mar-2008

I was back in the rolling hillsides of Suffolk for the Easter Weekend, all prepared for a weekend of golf fueled action, it started off well but then went slightly off course....

....Friday lunch time, I went out and battled the wind to get in a (not too bad) round before the heavens opened! Saturday was too cold to contemplate going out, with a mixture of sleet and snow, we had about an inch of snow settle! Saturday night was a bizzare, week late St Patricks day party at my local pub (the joys of village life!) and then sunday and monday were again dominated by sleet and snow, and watching Arsenal give up their chance at the title All in all, not enough golf, but a nice break from work!!

Farewell Mr Glove
By Robbie Allison on 26-Mar-2008

Turned up to my course Monday for me and Matt to have a long awaited knock together and searched my bag on the first tee. Where's me gloves,,?

So the round proceeds and I am gloveless and played the entire round this way. What a difference this made - I felt that I could feel the club head on shots, my grip was more compact and the grip pressure seemed easier to measure.

My drives seemed to go longer and straighter - in fact down the middle, my irons and wedge play was much better (although I was carrying two new Cleveland Tour wedges which, are just brill ) and my putting was spot on (27 putts for the round)

I know the pro's take off the glove for the putt but this is something I have never done. Come my next outing this Friday I will again be gloveless and similar results will make me think long and hard about buying another glove.

Aint it a lovely game....

First Blood!
By Scott Boyd on 23-Mar-2008

Played my first round of the new season on Saturday 22 March, a stableford competition, using preferred lies on closely mown areas and lift clean and drop in the rough. There was a horrendous North wind blowing down the course and with the wind chill it was very cold. No-one in the fourball scored on the first, all taking sevens and I set the trend for my round on the 2nd missing a very short (18 inches at the most), downhill putt for a par having to settle for a four. It was particularly galling as I had found the green off the tee and my first putt of about 25 feet just went past the hole. I then got on the par 5, 3rd in 3 and once again 3 putted.I then went par, bogey, bogey, bogey, and then missed a 'tiddler' on the 8th and had to settle for a 6. This was particularly annoying as I hit my 3 wood for safety as the ditch in front of the green was driveable and I duffed two approach shots and 3 putted also. Had a good par on the 9th, a bogey on the 10th and then my putting let me down again on the 11th and 12th for double bogeys. I then had 4 fairly good holes, bogey, bogey, par, par, before messing up with my putter on the 17th, and finished with a bogey 4 on the last. Two holes on the back 9 summed up my round for me, on the 14th I drove into the farway bunker, played my rescue wood and found the greenside bunker and scrambled a bogey in the end. On the 15th I had a putt from just off the front of the green and I knew it was good from the moment I hit it. But my luck was right out as it stopped just an inch from the hole, ah well better luck next time I hope!

The Belfry (completed!)

Woke up on saturday morning (with a slightly sore head!) and strolled out onto the 17th tee (shotgun Start) on the Brabazon. Hit a decent drive, but then followed it up with a thin second shot that hit the banking on the ditch and balooned up and back over my head about twenty yards! It was a sign of things to come! My first 11 holes were less than impressive, but then after making par on the tenth, things picked up a bit and my closing holes were much better. After the golf I had my first experience of the "Bel Air" nightclub, on the Belfry grounds and soon forgot all about my round!
