Ping G15 or the new G20?? Who prefers which??

Going to get myself a new driver over the winter. I currently have a G10 , well did until i gave my Dad a shot of it and now he's claimed it. So something new for me I feel. Being a Ping man at heart I will probably stick with one of the G15 or G20 models.Does anyone feel there's much difference between the two?? I know it will boil down to how I perform with either club but just like to hear other people's views on either of them

Planned obsolecence!

Manufacturers bring something new out each year, and then tell you its better than last year's model coz.... If it only all the hype was true  we'd all be hitting it a thousand yards and splitting the flag.

Buy last year's model at half the price, it will serve you just as well.

I bought a G10, broke it then bought a G15. I can't tell the difference. Its just brilliant. Anyway, the G20. slightly longer front to back with a bit more weight in the heel to make it easier to get the ball up, allegedly. Oh, and it costs a lot more. I haven't seen the Ping boys on tour shooting any different with this years model than they did with last years.

Agreed Brian, I bought a brand new callaway ft9 for 90 quid (not a taiwanese special) and it works like a charm when I strike it well.

I totally agree with Brian. Unless driver manufacturers get their act together and totally redesign on a sensible basis then driver head manufacturing as gone as far as it can go. Some driver manufacturers (desperate to improve on an economic high profit basis) are now  getting their product on the R. & A. / U.S.G.A. Conforming List before going on to manufacture entirely different specification  non-conforming driver heads, embodying hot faces which no-one ever tests. Such are sold to to the generally unaware general golfing public.  I personally own one such 'conforming' head and it performs far better that my genuinely conforming professional longdrive heads.

If however Ping (or whoever) bring out a new driver head with:

(a)  Smaller, more aerodynamic, heads eg. 360cc,

(b)  Lower spinning with all of the weighting back centered,

(c)  Top quality materials.

Then it's time to sit up and take notice. Forget all of the advertised nonsense about a 'much bigger sweet spot' as engineering wise it just is not possible. All that manufacturers can do is widen the forgiveness area around the centre of percussion which is an entirely different matter.

However, watch out for the massive sting in the tail:

Most 'high street' major manufacturers do not allow you to buy the head seperately so that you can then  fit it to a quality shaft. Their head almost invariably comes with a cheap duff shaft, and that is where a lot of their profit is made. Often the shafts bear almost the same labels as their expensive counterparts but are a poor shadow of such.  In order to put a really good product in your hands high street prices would likely increase by over £100. per driver.

Most golfers are unaware of the names of the top head manufacturers (who sell their heads alone as components) as they do not have the funds to extensively market their wares as they do not make the necessary profits to enable them to do so.

Off the shelf drivers are without any exceptions purely low performing fashion statements with tour players using products totally different to the high street versions.
